I just got it. He meant the whole ordeal from start with Faye to break up with Dora and the reason why when he said "It's complicated."

-> "It's complicated, I had a crush on Faye once but it turns out she had abandonment issues and was a nervous wreck of sorts. So when she told me and I had to stop crushing on her, her boss, Dora, dashed in and when that broke apart over HER insecurity issues caused by self-doubt yadda..."

It's complicated enough that Faye's counselor had to map it out and label it using thumbtacks and string. THAT's complicated.
