My wife and I live in a one-room apartment and we spend the majority of our time outside work sitting in opposite corners talking, watching shows, mucking about in the kitchen or in the form of a squishy two-headed chimera. A Date for us is about changing things up, taking a small break from our routine.

But before that, Dating was about other things, like signalling that we like each other in That Way, that we might want to jump each other's bones, that we wanted to do things together that were just about Us, etc. Like with giving presents, it's the thought that counts :o and sometimes people think differently so you end up with the whole, "Omg, you thought this was a DATE-date?!" situation.

Then there are the less sexy dates where two people meet up to do something like drinking coffee or jogging or whatever. That doesn't really count as Dating from what I've gathered, even though it can be a part of a courtship. That's just about committing to meeting at specific place at a specific time (as opposed to saying something like, "Yeah, that sounds like fun, I might join you if I can get away.")

Weird thing.

Me and and a couple of others organized a pub evening for our work colleagues the other day and I got through a couple of Beatles tunes without killing my vocal chords, which was a success in so many ways.

I've got a steady gig at my job now, will probably be here for the next few years if nothing unexpected happens (probably will…). This of course brings me endless anxiety and restlessness since I still want to be a musician more than a lawyer. Probably why I decided to check in on the old qc forum!

Will probably ponder this further in some other thread...

The family in Alaska who opened their hearts and doors and cupboards for me while I worked there with them just lost their youngest daughter. I've been crying all day and I'm losing my mind because I know I can't go visit them for the funeral service, it's just prohibitively expensive. God I feel sick

I thought of that, but I lived with my ex for a year and we went out for romantic reasons... once on valentines? I dunno, I think the concept of setting off time for a romantic date night out is pretty American. Doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it, I just don't understand it. Now, the American concept of Mythbusters and Ben & Jerrys in bed I can understand the hell out of.

I don't think any of my fellow European real life friends go on dates either, and certainly not any parents I know of. My parents had plenty of time to be a couple after our bedtime, and they were always very affectionate with each other when we were around too. I think the closest thing people here do is go for weekend or week long trips somewhere once in a while?

I've found as parents the idea of a set-aside date night is much more important than it was when we were 20-somethings living together.    Having a teenager that stays up later than we do might contribute, I guess.

That's dangerous. It might be misheard as "by Hear'Say", and that'll lose you the case right off the bat.

M'lud, it is preposterous to suggest that my client intended to expose his child to dark and inhumane rituals oft viewed as satanic in nature. He was merely expressing an intent to educate his daughter in the post-farming elements of the meat-processing industry and thereafter leave her to draw her own moral conclusions. It is well within the defendants rights of free speech that he chose to do so through the medium of heavy metal.

I am in the office at half past midnight, because when I was running updates on my clustered Hyper-V host servers (out-of-hours, remotely, from home), the cluster service on one of them crashed and rendered both machines insensible.  I had to come in to the office and turn them off forcibly, and now I'm waiting for them to be ready to restart all the virtual machines so that I can check them out.

Ugh!

Dear blog thread,

this has been a Good Week. Though I'm in one of those phases where I hate being on call, and though I haven't been getting enough sleep and though my wards have been packed ie. with no real room for new admissions, it's been Fun! Interesting and challenging diagnoses, my favourite attendings, fun colleagues and everyone in a good mood... and I've been able to rely both on my intuition and my knowledge/experience to do the Right Things. It's one of those "I'm a Good Doctor" weeks.

But more importantly, it's been a week full of love and friendship! And a great deal of luxury. For our anniversary I had the day off, we checked into a nice hotel and had an amazing dinner (at a restaurant I had decided to hate but couldn't 'cause it was just so delicious) and just a really nice time to ourselves. The next morning I had one of the best hotel-breakfasts ever. It was a bit of a staycation I guess :) yesterday, I spent the whole day resting and reading nice things and then shopping for running stuff (including a pair of those Vibram Five-Finger "barefoot" shoes that I've been wanting to try out and that really feel pretty damn' good!) and various little things we need to fix up the apartment a little. This was followed by a stroll around town with my missus and finally a delicious dinner of various little mouthgasm-inducing munchies and cocktails at another nice newly-opened restaurant. Got home early and just collapsed and bam suddenly it was early morning and I was well-rested for once. God, SLEEP. It's the best and most important thing in life next to love.

Today we're having guests over for the first time in like a million years. The kitchen is still not fully functional, esp. the stove, but i think we can manage some elk taco kinda thing. I have the whole weekend off to recuperate, enjoy good company and get things done. And it's spring. Really really cold and windy spring but whatever, the sun comes up at like 4 and my head no longer feels heavy :)

I am drunk and saw an airliner flying miles overhead toward places unknown, and it made me think of my dad and the myriad ways he and I could connect with each other but can't, for whatever reason. And then I wrote a song out of nowhere, and I think it's one of the better ones. It doesn't waste time getting to the heart of the matter, and it puts into words exactly how I feel without sugarcoating anything. I think it might be my best effort yet.

I'm moving! Assuming my references and credit checks go ok, and I can't see why they wouldn't. I handed in the application form today and will get a definite yes or no from the landlord either in the next two hours or on Tuesday, and then it'll all be finalised within a week after that. The slight concern is that I have to give written notice to my current landlord on Tuesday, so there's a tiny chance that I'll give notice that I'm leaving, and then fail the credit checks and not be able to move. But there's really no reason why that would happen, and if it did my current landlord would probably take me back anyway as that's easier than getting someone new.

The new flat is bigger (yay!) with windows which face east, west, and north in the bathroom so there'll be plenty of light. It comes with a table and chairs in the kitchen area and there's space for a desk (maybe even a big corner desk!) which will be awesome. And there's a built-in wardrobe and space for a chest of drawers and basically it's much nicer than this flat, for not much more money. There's no washing machine in the flat itself but there's one in the building and a tumble dryer too. The convenience of the dryer (which I don't have now) will offset the inconvenience of having to go down two flights of stairs to do laundry.

I'm also getting a new laptop next week; my current one has died completely and at the moment I'm using one I've borrowed from the university library. I have to return it and get a different one every week, and it doesn't have all the software I need, so it's not a long-term solution but I'm very glad of it because I have two essays due and an exam to revise for. My dad's bought me a "new" second-hand one which I'll go pick up next weekend :)
