When you have groups from several universities collaborating, it can be almost hopeless to get (a) those concerned to agree which university's systems should be used and (b) that university's IT team to give appropriate access to everyone in a timely and effective manner.  Such groups quickly realise that using an existing independent and free service designed for collaboration has obvious benefits.

My users are not allowed to do this, as there's no way we would get away with putting patient information in clinical trials into a cloud server however secure it might be in practice; but many other groups are not subject to the degree of regulatory control that mine is.

A point. Some of you are working on a rather larger scale than I ever do.

Google docs is my university's system.

the University of Michigan contracted their email to Google last year and with it signed up for Google Applications.  I now schedule meetings and reserve rooms using a google calender and collaborate with peers using Google docs.  Before the switch over to google I am not aware of any other content managment system that I had access to as a student.  Rooms were scheduled using a SharePoint calendar, but I did not have my own calender and I was not allowed access to the parts of SharePoint which would allow me to create and share a file library or work with someone remotely on the same document (which I am not sure is even a function within SharePoint), so we used Google docs anyways.  This way actually makes it easier to separate school files from private ones (I was constantly accepting Google doc invites with my private email instead of my university one). , and since it is synced with the university's user directory, I can search for the people I want to add without being sure of their exact email.

I just noticed that the job I applied for last month with the county has been re-posted.  I don't know if this is a different position with the same job title, or the same one.  I never got a call for the first job, and this makes me anxious that they didn't get any applications they thought were worth pursuing (including mine).  I thought I was well qualified....

I am going to reapply in the hopes that it is a different position and maybe I will get this one.

It wasn't one where you applied with the resume with the wrong phone number, was it?
