Mafia 4 - Sweet, Sweet Vengeance
« on: 05 Feb 2013, 09:21 »

Hello! I am your faceless fearless leader. Welcome to the Driller secret society. We are among the few clear-headed groups of thinkers able to see what the Filibian empire really is about. Sure, Emperor Sugarcane talks about spreading love and good will, but all we're really getting is bread and circuses! There's no actual free will or ability to move up in this world we live in and this needs to change!

Which is where we come in. The nine of you are capable individuals and I have the plan necessary to take the empire apart piece by piece. We don't even have to execute it perfectly for it to succeed, which is great because my resources indicate that there's been some foul play within societies as of late. I've tried to run background checks against all of you, but the last people I sent out to do research were sent back to me with shapened candy canes protruding from their spines. Luckily, one of them was alive enough to give me this juicy nougat: THREE OF YOU ARE SPIES. And then he promptly died.  :-\

Which three of you are traitors to the cause, I can't even begin to guess, but since I can't afford to have you killing one another to figure it out, I will ask that you figure it out rationally like adults. Do you understand? I'm assuming you're nodding at me; if not please rectify this immediately.

Great! I have sent a document explaining the basic structure of my plan and how I would like you all to carry this out. Follow it carefully! I will give you more details on each mission as they come up. Good luck operatives!

RULES

Each round will consist of a team building phase, a voting phase, and possibly a mission phase.

Team Building Phase:

Every round one player will be the leader. Here is the randomly generated leader order:

1.) TheEvilDog
2.) Black Sword
3.) henri bemis
4.) Gareth
5.) TRVA123
6.) de_la_Nae
7.) dr. nervioso
8.) Unicorn
9.) riccostar

When it is your turn to be leader, you will choose who goes on the current mission. The leader may choose him or herself to be one of the team members. The following indicates how many people are needed to be on each mission:

Mission 1: Gareth, henri bemis, Unicorn - SUCCESS
Mission 2: Gareth, Unicorn, TRVA123, de_la_Nae - FAILURE
Mission 3: Unicorn, henri bemis, riccostar, de_la_Nae - FAILURE
Mission 4: 5 person team
Mission 5: 5 person team

The leader will, in a colored, bold font, indicate who they propose to send on the mission. If it's not in this font, it will be assumed that you are throwing a suggestion out there for feedback and not actually submitting it for a vote.

Voting Phase:

Once the proposed team is submitted for voting, everyone will submit to me via a PM whether they APPROVE or DISAPPROVE  the suggested team. If any spies were selected to be on the mission they will also submit whether they will be choosing to SUPPORT or SABOTAGE. Once ALL the votes are in, I will simultaneously reveal who voted APPROVE or DISAPPROVE. So remember, this vote WILL be revealed and you WILL have to own up to it if confronted about it. You can say in the thread that you would approve a certain team but then disapprove it via PM or vice versa, just remember some people may or may not look unfavorably at that.

If the majority of people support the team, then the mission will continue with the suggested team.

If it's a tie or the majority oppose the suggested team, then the round is over and the next one starts. The next leader will try to arrange a new team for the same mission.

Mission Phase:

If a team has been approved, then the number of SUPPORTS and SABOTAGES will be anonymously revealed. If the mission is disapproved, any SUPPORTS or SABOTAGE PMs from spies will be ignored and the next round begins.

In missions 1, 2, 3, and 5, the mission succeeds if no sabotage has been committed. They fail if even one sabotage has been revealed. Mission 4 is special and much more foolproof. It requires TWO sabotages to fail.

There are three spies and six operatives. The spies have been notified of their status. If you received no notification you are a driller operative.

Win/Lose Conditions:

The resistance faction wins as soon as there are three successful missions.

The spy faction wins as soon as there are three failed missions.

The spy faction also wins if there are five consecutive mission teams that do not get approved (the resistance does not trust one another enough to get organized and the government continues to reign).

Other notes:

There is no player elimination in this. Voting to lynch each other will be met with hysterical laughter from me.

There are no deadlines unless I think the game is lagging. I will then set a deadline for the current phase if it becomes a problem. If you have a real life issue you have to work around please try to notify me and I will try to work with you around it.

You are free to discuss anything you want at any point in the game, but I will ask that you keep it confined to the game thread itself and no PMing unless it's with me as part of the gameplay or to ask a question. This is even if you're a spy. Part of the challenge for spies is to make sure they coordinate their sabotages while everyone is watching and listening to you and I'd like to try to simulate that as best as possible. Honor system!

The sign up thread can still be used for general discussion and for people watching from the sidelines! Just make sure your discussion will not impact the actual game. Use your best judgement on what that entails.

We are now in the Team Building Phase for round 1.1!

TheEvilDog, take it away. Others, you're free to throw in suggestions and do the usual discussion you'd have in regular mafia until it's time to vote.

I need a couple of volunteers for a mission, and by volunteers, I mean I'm going to pick three people. Come forward as I call your name and codename.

Gareth , aka Maggott.
Henri Bemis, aka Franko.
Unicorn, aka Posey.

Good luck and try not to screw things up.

In case you aren't aware....

We are in the Voting Phase for round 1.1!

Send me a PM indicating you APPROVE or DISAPPROVE of the above suggested team. Once I have all nine of you in, I will reveal who voted what and whether the mission is cleared to go.

For future reference, there's no need to actually wait on me to announce this phase for you to send in your vote. We're in it as soon as the leader's suggestion is locked in. I'm only doing this so that nobody (including me) gets confused. And because it makes me feel important.

Why the fuck would I want to go?

Also, Maggott? With two Ts? Is that a spelling error or is there some connotation to the extra T I'm not getting?

They told me it would be like this when I came back from Korea.

I've decided to do things a little differently than I intended for the sake of entertainment value and timing. I'll do the mission briefings once the mission is confirmed to be a go and then do the result narritive after:

All right, operatives! The rest of the team finds you three trustworthy and I have no choice but to trust you as well, so here are the mission details.

Your target is the Blueberry Gingerbread Factory. As you know, all Filibian citizens are given a hunk of gingerbread along with the rest of their meager rations. I don't need to tell you how delicious that stuff is. Well it's time you know that taste has nothing to do with why that stuff is so damn good. It's drugged. Sure, it has a mathematically perfect blend of sugar, spices, and all that is supposedly good in this world, but it also has chemicals meant to keep you dim-witted and content. It also keeps you addicted so you get sick if you even try to stop eating it for the month.

Honestly, you're all troopers for just being able to quit the stuff. And I only had to use minimal coercion to do it! Know that I'm proud of you all... except for the traitors. I still hate you lot.

Oh right... the mission. My sources indicate there's been a new formula developed, more potent than before. It's being carried around by the original formula's creator, a Dr. January Blueberry. I'll need you to kill her... make it look like an accident, if you can. Then switch out her formula for the one I'm sending you. It should help wake the public up and get them ready to see Sugarcane for what he really is!

All right, move out!

I apologize for the delay. Here we go, folks:

It wasn’t hard to maneuver around a building at night, taking out guards and stealing their uniforms and access codes, all while avoiding the watchful eye of the camera. Soon, they were in the building, fudge rifles in hand.

None of the guards or janitors seemed to even bat an eyelash at the three new faces. It made it much easier to pull a couple janitors aside for a friendly interrogation. They even got lucky and got the keys to the monitoring station.

Unicorn entered the room and soon found Blueberry stepping into the ladies room on one of the monitors. She relayed the information and Henri Bemis was quick to go after the scientist.

Blueberry wasn’t too pleased to literally be caught with her pants down, but as much as she wanted to say “sod off” she had no choice but to reveal the location of the formula in her office if she wanted a chance at living. Henri gave Gareth the new info to check out while she dragged Blueberry out of the bathroom and up an unguarded stairway she had noticed.

Gareth picked the lock to Blueberry’s office, found the (to his relief) unsecured drawer she was temporarily keeping the formula and swapped it out. He left, locking the door behind him.

While all this was happening, Unicorn managed to take a previous day’s recordings and Hollywood hacked them with the current day’s so that nobody would be the wiser of  who had been there.

Finally, Henri took Blueberry to the rooftops, where they were all to meet and arranged for her to have an accidental meeting with the pavement. Once that was complete, the trio rappelled  down the side of the building, using the licorice ropes they were provided.

MISSION SUCCESS!

Support: 3   Sabotage: 0

We are now on mission 2. This is Team Building Phase 2.1. Black Sword, you're the leader this round and get to choose a team of four.

Voting Phase 2.1 has started

Thank you de for the heads up! If you know whether you'd want to support or sabotage the mission IF you were to go on it, you could PM that to me ahead of time and I'll use it until the end of Sunday, until the end of Mission 2, or until you show up again and are ready to continue (whichever comes first). I think that'd be the easiest and most efficient way to handle these cases... though maybe someone has a better idea.

I'm tempted to disapprove.  Unicorn, Gareth and I are the only ones tested so far, and our mission was successful.  I know I'd be an asset to the team, and I'd definitely be more comfortable if there were only one non-veteran operative instead of two.  On the other hand, I'll be leading a mission soon, and it would help my decision to see how this goes with more players.

I'm not fully decided yet.  I want to hold of my vote a bit to see if there's any discussion.

but since both me and Gareth didn't sabotage the last mission, it's pretty likely we'll both not sabotage this one, which leaves only 2 people whose loyalty we're unsure of instead of 3.

Because it's totally not asinine to send the same guys on the mission when we're trying to find a saboteur?

All right, team. The mission this time is easy. Soon my brand of gingerbread will be consumed and the people will wake up and be ready to fight. We need to get them weapons.

I made a deal with a couple small-time suppliers looking to get ahead in the new world order. Only problem is that they want to see a sample of the sort of change we're about to bring. To convince them, I've chosen for us to tackle the Gummi Weapon Munitions factory. As you know, Gummi is top dog as far as weapons manufacturing goes. With their best factory down, the emperor's army will be weakened and they will have to cut a deal with the weaker competitors. And they will agree to help... by sending over faulty weapons and giving us their best.

Destroy the main Gummi factory and get back in one piece! Head out!

----

The mission should have been easy. In order to prevent sabotaging, the leader told them they'd meet a contact that would give them the sour warhead explosives necessary to blow up the factory. The four members arrived at the meeting spot, an abandoned graham cracker lot that was set to be torn down soon.

After exchanging secret handshakes and pass phrases, the contact surrendered the goods. The team went out and placed the explosives in key areas around the building, avoiding or taking out guards along the way. It was the exact same synergy as before. This seemed like another easy win.

The four walked out of range of the explosives. One of them pulled the detonator out of their pocket and hit the button. Everyone braced themselves for the loud detonation.

And the warheads did indeed explode.... into a combustion of confetti and the din of party noisemakers. Before the operatives could fully realize what had happened, they were surrounded by hidden guards. The warheads had been compromised! They'd been betrayed!

The four quickly fought their way out and managed to head back to HQ once they were sure they weren't followed.

The leader met them with a grim news. "The broken body of your contact was found not too long ago, troops. They beat you to him, tortured him for information, and put one of their own in his place. And then they decided to embarrass us. One of you four ratted us out. I have no intel indicating who but... well, try to figure it out in time for the next mission."

MISSION FAILURE!
