I think he had plenty of warning, I just don't think he realized his last chance to hang out with her was actually his last chance to hang out with her until it was too late to possibly make it not so.

I don't know for certain, but I don't think it's all that common. Where transition "ends" varies from person to person, and it can take many years and many thousands of dollars. Lots of people don't want to go without romance for so long.
