Braindmged:
Now I want to see a picture of Jeph's guitar collection.

Zebediah:
Marten can't ever bring himself to do anything about pursuing a woman he's attracted to, but show him a guitar and he throws caution to the wind.

GarandMarine:

Isn't that all men on some level? Ships, Space ships,  cars, high end computers, rifles, airplanes, a tall ship and a star to steer her by, etc

Besides, guitar like this, be with ya till the day you die.

Sassafras:
I really hope Marten does start working more on the band, because it's almost impossible to advance in any significant way at a library without a degree in it.

--- Quote from: Loki on 02 Apr 2013, 02:12 ---Regarding Harry Potter:
(click to show/hide)Sirius was literally burnt out from the family tree. I am a bit suspicious about how he had any money at all.

(click to show/hide)Later we find out he's the only one left access the hidden Black family mansion, which no doubt had a safe-full of money there, probably much more than would be needed for the Firebolt anyway (or just enough for one and he was grateful to Harry and impulsive enough to spend it all).

Mr_Rose:

--- Quote from: Loki on 02 Apr 2013, 02:12 ---I came here thinking "someone's bound to figure out how much that thing costs".
I was not disappointed  :-D

Regarding Harry Potter:
(click to show/hide)Sirius was literally burnt out from the family tree. I am a bit suspicious about how he had any money at all.

On the other hand, most of his relatives were either dead (Regulus), imprisoned on account of being batshit-crazy (Bellatrix), purged from the family tree as well (Tonks branch of the family), or too distant and the wrong allegiance (Weasley). Narcissa might have qualified, though.

I suppose the goblins at the bank would also not be a problem, as long as they would be paid appropriately.

Guitar context: marten paid $1600 for his vintage Gibson SG. Marten sold traded in (trade ins are always worse than sales) his Telecaster to make up a third of the price of the 8-stringer. There is no relative connection here.

Spoiler context:
(click to show/hide)We have no evidence whatsoever that the family tree on the wall was anything more or less than a decoration, even if it was self-updating. Plus he said his mother burned him off, yet the head of the household was always referred to with masculine pronouns; if one assumes the Black household was patriarchal (not too unreasonable given their other beliefs) then her doing that on her own initiative would have had no real effect beyond singing the wall without the consent of her head of house.

As for how Sirius had money; he was an auror (relatively well paid), considered family by the Potters (gifts? Trust fund after his mother threw him out?), was originally the heir apparent of a wealthy house (trust vault again) and spent twelve years at government expense with whatever money he had before his incarceration accruing interest unchecked - since he was never tried, much less convicted, who would have sent out the asset freeze order? Heck, given the general competence of the Ministry, I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't still being paid (with standard raises for seniority) his Auror wages….
