Region Roll Call
Redball:
I recall reading about the Schleswig-Holstein Question in a history course. I've never looked into it, but I think it's connected with the reason my great-great-grandfather deserted from the Danish army in the early 1860s, eventually to become a tower clock builder in Manistee Michigan. And it's behind the second of the very funny Flashman historical novels, Royal Flash.
ankhtahr:
Schleswig-Holstein and the Danish still have some kind of a special relationship. In the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament (Landtag) the party of the Danish minority is still unaffected by the usual 5 percent rule. Usually parties can only become members of the parliament, if they can gather over 5 percent of all votes. The SSW (Südschleswigs Wählerverband/Sydslesvigsk Vælgerforening) is not affected by this.
There's still the myth of when the referendum about which parts of Schleswig-Holstein to become Danish was held, the majority for become German was only by one vote.
Akima:
What region are you from? That is a tricky question, but I went with Australia. It's not where I'm from, but it is where I am.
Is it cold in here?:
Come to think of it, why do English speakers use "from" in reference to someone's home? Logically "from" should mean your next-to-last location.
mtmerrick:
...what would you say instead?
