Although.. I'm not quite sure of what you mean by "heavy".  Heavy like Zimmer's Hole? Dimmu Borgir? Early Cradle of Filth? The Agonist?

For various reasons, I wouldn't really call any of those bands "heavy" as such. Zimmer's Hole is awesome and fun as heck but not terribly heavy in the traditional sense. A bit too fast for that. Dimmu and Cradle both had some sort of connection to Black Metal way back, a notoriously trebly and un-heavy genre by its definition. Their newer is way too overproduced and keyboard-y to be genuinely heavy in a metallic sense, although both bands have abandoned the BM genre more or less entirely. The Agonist.... Ehm.. Let's just say I don't like that band. I don't like it when bands promote themselves through a female lead singer's novelty factor (I'm looking at you, Arch Enemy) but the dudes behind the female singer serve up piss-weak, boring riffs that just sort of leaves the vocalist standing there, alone, without a proper backing. In The Agonist, the singer does a very decent job, but the rest of the band just don't try hard enough.

As for heaviness, it is enormously difficult to define properly, due to it being so diverse. Personally, I choose to define it as "tune way down and play fucking slow". In my mind, fast bands can't be heavy in the same way bands with a more moderate tempo can. In my mind, the ultimate example of heaviness in Metal – were you to twist my arm and force me to pick one – is still good ol' Bolt Thrower. Listen to the first track off this album and tell me it's not like getting run over by a tank, slowly and meticulously:

Ahh, so more like The Acacia Strain and The Black Dahlia Murder but not so much Strapping Young Lad? Possibly Rose Funeral?
Necrophagist is pretty heavy I would say.. even though they only had a few albums. iwrestledabearonce is pretty fun too :)

That Bolt Thrower song sounds pretty awesome.. sounds like it could of been in Doom 2 or should of been in Brütal Legend

Lummer:
TAS can qualify as heavy, methinks, yes.

But really, a lot of new-school metal lacks that grit that makes for actual heaviness, as opposed to just abrasive-sounding. Some of it is production, but still. No offense, but the bands you're mentioning are what I'd call "gateway" bands, the sort of stuff people listen to when they're sort of dipping their toes into extreme metal. The entry-level stuff can still be good, but personally I don't really get as much out of it as I get from the really nasty stuff. If I want metal, I want it as yucky as possible, and most modern metal is simply too clean and cute.

BeoPuppy:
Clean yuckiness sells.

Lupercal:
So Lummer, the logical conclusion is that you want sludge metal. But it's another illogical metal sub-genre name.
