When my wife's friend Jane Alexander married Allen Manifold, they hyphenated.  Their firstborn was named Asher Byron Alexander-Manifold. 

I still maintain that it's the name of an engine part for a Rolls-Royce. 


Edit:  My bad, it's a part for a Sebring.

Maybe, but that's their problem. It's not the government's place to get involved just because someone's name is unwieldy.

It is when it doesn't fit on a form needed for some public service, like voter registration or to pay taxes.
