I'm looking through the recent strips, and I'm thinking that Jeph has intentionally avoided showing the other side of the coffee shop for a while just to set up that gag.

As long as his glasses are still shining, he's still a joke character.
I really hate to keep harping on that point, because I've literally never had an issue with Jeph's drawing before, but I lose my Willing Suspension of Disbelief every time I see Dale's face.
You don't need much Suspension of Disbelief for a four-panel webcomic, especially one with breeding Roombas and Holoponies...so the fact that I could lose it at all was somewhat surprising to me.
So I'm afraid I can't take Dale seriously as a character until the glare goes away. Perhaps I'll be a minority of one...but somebody has to shake their fist at that cloud.
