I thought it was stated somewhere that AIs had a kinda minor-child status. Wouldn't that make Marten the "father?"

AnthroPCs seem to have that status. AIs as a whole ... well, Spaceship and Station seem to run their respective ... bodies ... as they see fit. And I guess Station is considered of legal age to at least simulate drinking.

Is it cold in here?:
This is total speculation, but there may have been a compromise in the Robot ERA to allow parental supervision until the AI somehow reaches legal adult status.

It would make total sense if AIs go through a stage where their minds are working but they are exceptionally plastic (no pun intended for once) and have to learn life skills by practice. Some things are easier to learn than to program. In humans we call a state like that "childhood".
