Other story potential: Faye discovers actually *being* in charge (even at a second-in-command level) is nowhere near as fun as *acting as if* you're in charge.
That sounds to me like an underestimation of Faye: I'm pretty sure she's quite aware.

... unless plot dictates otherwise, of course ... not that Jeph is the worst in that regard.  :-P

  • The distilled essence of Mr. James Beam himself.

She's already training the noobs (someone else can dig it up, but I can clearly see Hanner's contempt-face).

She opens, closes... all that's left is scheduling and the books, and Dora might appreciate the help after her decimal point fiasco.

She might need more help with the training and scheduling if she hires Dale, too.  Then she can get some time off for herself.

Maybe take a bus trip.

Scheduling, the books, and the secret recipe, you mean.

Of course, Dora would probably keep that to herself lest Faye decide she can have it all…

Well, that's hard to say.  If I was to take him up on that bet, there's actually a good chance we'd see it happen within the next couple of strips (as my luck typically runs).  Unless we hit the "not important" factor of my luck, in which case we'll see Angus not get the part.

Long story....

Everyone with any pride in their work has a control freak looming under the surface, unless it's in the open.

What about Dora's control freak?  "Well, duh!"  It's very much in the open.  But she's aware, since some time, she's working on it, and I expect she'll soon enough either recognize the opportunity or have Faye knock recognition into her.

Let's assume for a minute that the shop is still doing well enough to support these changes. Yes, I realize that the "shop is the new cool thing because they insult you" storyline was quite a while back IRL, but it's only a few months ago in QC time.

If Dora's really working 80 hrs a week and is serious about coming down to one FTE (Full Time Equivalent = 40 hours a week) by offloading her duties on Faye, that means Faye's shifts as a regular employee are now available. This isn't probably a 1 to 1 swap, but if Dora stops shifts behind the counter as manager and gives them to Faye, they'll still need up to a FTE of just plain counter coverage so Dora can spend more time in the back room doing books, or ordering, or roasting for her burgeoning wholesale business (my head canon...respect it).

That leaves plenty of available slots in the schedule for Dale, who was already probably part time at each of his other jobs, to give up the pizza job and pick up 20-40 hours at CoD.

Also, if Penelope or Cosette decide to take a hike, or Hanners decides to cut back to go back to counting (or whatever...like she has to work... well, maybe she does for her sanity) there will be even more hours/shifts to go around.

I think the indie rag story was the equivalent of last fall under the current storyline.

And yes, Jeph apparently "accidentally" put Friday's comic up (which you can still see if you know the "secret doorway").

Weird, I could've sworn I already tried that with no luck before but I guess I just hit forward from today's. As for the comic, Penelope's response makes sense, Cosette's less so.

Cosette doesn't really add anything and was never really a regular anyway, but Pe-ne-lope plays off Faye really well. Even if the character doesn't go anywhere it's good to have her around just for that. The grumpy, dry sarcasm is good for setting up or delivering a punchline. There's no need to push her out for Dale when Dale can just be a customer.

If that's the plan anyway as today's comic is just as likely a throwaway gag. Though even if it is she's still been underutilized ever since Hanners was hired.

I get the feeling that someone is going to head over to the Secret Bakery (after all, with Padma gone, there is a position open over there).  Sure.. there might be some issues with Jim picking off one of Dora's employees.

Would love to see someone who was written out come back in, but the chances of someone like Sara coming back.. I think I have a better shot winning the lottery.. twice.

Interesting to note that Faye does look nearly as shocked (but again, perhaps not surprising).

My calculations are that it was about a year ago, last summer to be precise.  It was just when Faye got herself into counselling.

However, the impression I got from that storyline was not that Coffee of Doom was new but it had just been discovered by a reviewer.  I got the impression from the conversations between Dora and Marten's mother (and Dora and the guy who runs the other bakery) that Coffee of Doom had been around for a while.

Honestly, I hate this sort of situation. People have knee-jerk reactions like Penelope and Cosette because of their general dislike for Faye. But I think Faye is probably quite capable of doing her new job. People see her having power as something she would wield dangerously. But you don't know how someone will treat power until they are given it. I have seen many people rise from the ashes when no one thought they would succeed. Giving someone responsibility will teach them how to use it properly. Faye looks genuinely happy. She doesn't have an evil grin or anything. Acting like her being in management is worth quitting over... that's just childish, to me. I seriously hope they're being sarcastic. I have an inclination to think that they're not. And that bothers me.

Pretty sure they're serious.  Faye is quite often condescending, and has never demonstrated the ability to manage people. The closest she has come is minding Jim's daughter.

I actually wouldn't mind having Faye as my boss, as long as I'd be allowed to joke back with her. I think she's capable of stepping up to the plate. She can also handle criticism if she's being problematic. She's grown a lot, and I don't think very many people are giving her the credit she deserves. I honestly didn't care for her for a long time, for how she was so casually mean-spirited. She's a different person now. If she proves she can't handle the job, well, she can get demoted. No harm done.

That's a good point. ^.^;;; I would guess that if something bad happened, then it would be taken care of as quickly as possible to minimize the damage, then. Is that specific enough to cover my original error of phrasing? :)

Faye may be chaotic, but I don't think she's destructive enough at this point in her life to do enough harm that it couldn't be solved quickly. Unless she's secretly messing up bookkeeping or something and not telling anyone for months. @_@ Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I think Faye would own up to a mistake if she realized she didn't deserve the promotion anymore because of it.

Cosette will be around for a while, I think. She's still Steve's girlfriend, after all...and he's not going anywhere.

As for Penelope, we see her rarely enough as it is, and Wil has all but disappeared (a good thing, IMO)...so it would not surprise me if we never hear from her again.

Aside from the occasional Pizza Girl gag.
