Umm, what??? That's pointless...

I think it is easier to touch your own face less than to wash/disinfect your hands more.  When I work retail in particular, I'm going to touch floors and people and all sorts of gross surfaces, instead of constantly disinfecting, I just make sure to wash my hands before I eat.  If you shower once a day, use the bathroom at least twice (I've an iron bladder), and eat three time, you are already washing your hands at least 6 times a day... unless they are actually getting dirty, like, (you touched raw meat, or poop, or you picked up dirty tissues) or you have some need to keep touching your mouth/face (like you have itchy eyes, or bite your nails), it seems like 6+ times a day of washing your hands is probably enough.

I don't get sick any more frequently than the average person, so I think my system works just fine?

nekowafer:
I don't use disinfectant after every person I touch, just before I touch my face/food/etc after touching another person or something I deem gross. But I also have some obsessive compulsive tendencies that I cant really shake that tell me to do it more often. I try to negate that by using non-antibacterial soap when I have to wash my hands a lot.

Also: I have seen someone at work use the clearly marked no-water-needed hand sanitizer to wash her hands in the sink. I don't get it.

LTK:
I realise my evidence is anecdotal, but I only wash my hands when they feel exceptionally dirty, after I've cleaned up something nasty in the kitchen or the bathroom, but that's maybe once a week. I shower way more often than I wash my hands, and I haven't had any illness other than the common cold in years. (Other than that idiopathic sudden deafness thing, but what are the odds that not washing your hands makes you deaf?) Modern society does a good enough job of eliminating pathogens already, it's not like I have to worry about contracting cholera any more.

Papersatan:
I'm gonna say "gross" if you are admitting you don't wash your hands after taking a shit.  A lot of hand washing is to keep others from getting sick, for instance, washing your hands after you use the bathroom...  it's one of the things you ought to be doing because you are part of a society and your practices effect the health of others.  Like getting vaccinated.

LTK:
Oh yes, I forgot about public (and other people's) bathrooms. I do wash my hands coming out of those, mostly because I'm expected to. I don't think it really makes any difference, because most of us aren't doing anything that would make our excreted gut bacteria end up outside of the bathroom, are we?
