Interesting, considering they are twin brothers (though I'll be the first to admit that the Super Mario canon is fuzzy.).

I think it's more of the fact that in the Super Mario Bros. game for a DOS PC (It worked more like a Joust-type game.. it was weird), there was a Red/Orange Mario and a Green Mario ("Luigi"). You always got the Green Mario if you were the second player :)

ooooooooooooh yeah I definitely get that.

My sister just didn't like the Super Nintendo. Or we'd play together. And I think she grew out of it pretty soon.

I did let my little sister "play", as in, give her the second controller and "act" as if I was player two (worked very well with Donkey Kong Country). Also worked with my best friend.

I remember in SMB1 that player 1 could pause the game with his controller when player 2 was playing.  My cousins refused to let me play as Mario because I'd always do it to them so it'd be my turn to play again.
