Re: piercings & shit (late again...)

I have a small gold hoop that I got in my left ear in 1988.  I think I've removed it briefly... three times?  For job interviews.  It went back in after I got the job. Oh, yeah, and an MRI last year.  Don't want anything torn out... damn, that's 25 years now.

Doesn't change the fact that, after losing my main job last year at the age of 50, my father's only job seeking advice was to look at me and tell me to "lose the god-damned earring".     (yeah, he was 79 at the time...)

As for preventing employment, I work with the theatre department at my school and some actor's tattoos are a problem. Small ones can be covered up, but at a certain point we can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars and an extra hour before a show covering up "Ensemble Member #12's" full sleeve, and the concealer will start to separate under the lights anyway.

If there's one career where you need to consider the ramifications of modifying your body it's acting. Small facial piercings, fine for theatre. Small tattoos or ones that normally not visible, usually fine. Anything else and you start to slowly but surely limit the range of roles you can be cast in, and the LAST thing a working actor can afford to do is limit their castability.

That said, I still plan on getting some tattoos at some point. The place I work at now allows any tattoos no problem, facial piercings just have to be taken out at work.

Today's was comedy gold. Wondermark did a really funny one as well. I wish there were more Tuesday comics!

But gold is not ferromagnetic.  :?

pwhodges:
I guess that it could still produce artefacts through shadowing.

ZoeB:
I have my ears pierced, but that's all.
I've considered a small, tasteful tattoo in a discrete place - no more than 1" square - but decided against.

That's my choice.

I'll be darned though if I impose my own standards on anyone else!

I'd advise my son of the likely consequences of body piercings and permanent in-your-face body art on employment prospects - as well as safety issues if he goes into search and rescue, as he wants to do at the moment. But it's his choice. There's no "moral" issue here, just one of individual taste. I've never seen the appeal - but how many see the appeal in an activity I enjoy, painting and decaling 1/144 WWI aircraft models? Darn fewer than who have ink!
