Is it cold in here?:
--- Quote from: GarandMarine on 25 Sep 2013, 10:31 ---Yep. I think she'd be cool as hell to hang out with, and it's always nice to have rich, famous friends.
I think that Claire just being Claire is a fundamental part of what makes her such a great character. If the gender issues and issues with transition were up front and the focus of her character, then she could come off as one dimensional, both as a character and an element of the story. Instead it's presented as what they (her issues, trans or otherwise) are, part of a complex individual, she's Claire, librarian assistant, grad student and trans person, not the trans person, Claire.

Insightful, and I think Jeph is doing something socially useful by portraying Claire as he does. He has furiously explained that the strip isn't here to advance a social agenda, but of course every action has results and in this case the result is that a bunch of readers have a picture in their heads of a trans person who is on an equal footing with the rest of the cast.
Method of Madness:
It's kind of sad that "be nice to everyone" is considered a social agenda, and all the more sad how sorely it needs to be said.

That's one of the reasons I love the QC Universe. Everyone, is on equal footing with everyone else.
Martin had a fling with a darker skinned woman -- that's still considered an issue in some parts of this city.
Hanners has a form of mental illness -- her friends accept that and work with her on it.
Faye had/has issue stemming from a childhood trauma -- that's ok we'll work with you on that.
Claire is trans -- yeah so? So how 'bout them Bills are they a football team or WHAT?
---I wish MY world was a bit more like that. Hell I wish I could bring myself to be more like these people... said the racist jackass in Buffalo. ;)

I don't get it. Why does it matter so much that Claire is Transylvanian? Is it prejudice against vampires?
SomeCanadianWeirdo:
While we're on the subject of meat suits it should be noted that LA performance artist Johanna Went wore meat as part of her stage costumes almost a decade before Gaga was born. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johanna_Went
