You are unfortunately right. Even so, according to the text below the comic, it is about Claire being trans.

Exposure to the term is pretty standard in high and middle school history books in the US (or at least in California, maybe everyone else uses Texas board approved books), mostly associated with the French revolution (in a chart of the estates) and Karl Marx. Now, whether people remember is a whole other story, like most of education.
