Hats
Method of Madness:
Not necessarily, just because they use the hat doesn't mean they own it. Sometimes a hat is just a hat. If it's the hat and other aspects as well, sure, but it's unfair to judge someone based on one article of clothing they happen to think looks cool.
Thrillho:
I've never even heard of these fedora connotations.
Jace:
I'm not in the business of wasting time trying to figure out if someone wearing a fedora is truly a Fedora or just a dumbass with no sense of fashion. Thus it is a trivial matter to lump the latter group into the former. I am also not in the business of being fair with judgements, which is probably why I don't care for many of the people on this forum.

Obviously they developed in a little pressure-cooker of fashion and never really leaked out to the general public.
I had, however, noticed that they'd fallen out somewhat among the group of people with whom they were most associated (no, not the 90+ crowd...) I think it happened around the time Wal-Mart started carrying the really cheap ones. That usually kills any fashion trend.
Metope:
Yeah, those connotations are pretty normal, I've encountered it in a lot of places. I mean, this example is kind of ridiculous and out there, but say someone wears a tall, white pointy hat, you're still gonna think of certain associations even if they actually only wear it because they think it's a good look and they've never even heard of the KKK. A hat is not always just a hat.
