Thrillho:
Oh I was fully aware of the men's rights issue, I'd just never heard about the fedora aspect.
Method of Madness:
The issue is definitely an important one, but it's not doing anyone any good to say that "the guys that do this often wear fedoras, therefore fedoras = this".

The article Metope linked previously does a decent job of addressing how the increased prominence of girls in geek culture has caused the bad attitudes associated with "Men's Rights Activists" to flare up, to the point that they show up in force every time the topic of feminism is brought up. This video has a lot of relevant information about it as well. The "issue" is actually what's at the root of the widespread mistreatment of women (and every other non-straight white male minority) in online communities and not something that tumblr just made up for the lulz.
The fedora is just an innocent victim of the fashion sense of one demographic's unfortunate cultural outlook.

And that's not the issue we're talking about here. That IS an issue and a very valid one. The issue at hand is that "oh if you wear a fedora you hate wimminz" is about the most ridiuclous thing I've ever heard, and I goddamn watch CSPAN.

I'm pretty sure that was issue that Metope was getting at when she was talking about "an actual problematic issue that has exi(s)ted for a while", but I'll let her speak for herself if she chooses to elaborate on that.
Metope:
--- Quote from: Metope on 05 Oct 2013, 09:26 ---We're not trying to ban people from wearing fedoras (at least I'm not), just explain why some people don't like them. Like that quote in my first post about this says, it's okay to not agree with and ignore the connotations, but at least they explain why some people react the way they do.
--- End quote ---
I've said a variation of this in several posts in this very thread, I thought what I was trying to get across was pretty loud and clear by now. I mean, it's okay to not agree with and ignore the connotations, but it's also okay to say 'I don't like fedoras because of these connotations.' Nobody ever said 'everyone who wears a fedora is a Nice Guy or a woman hater.', and it's pretty weird to me to completely deny the existence of the connotations at all when they clearly exist which some people have said they do. Ignoring and disagreeing is one thing, denying its existence is another.
