I've said it before, but: I'm all in favour of Maire. The way I pronounce it ends up as more or less "mær".. as in "Maiden". :laugh:

Not in origin; "mare" (English) is from "*marhijō", a feminine form of "*marhaz", horse (possibly of Celtic origin), while "mær" (Icelandic and Old Norse) is from "*mawī", a feminine form of "*maguz", boy (of PIE origin).

In Danish, however, "mær" means mare, not maiden ...

Oh, and in French, "maire" (from Latin "major") means master, and gave rise to Middle English "mer", "mair", meaning mayor. :)
