I think Loki meant the number of bits must be divisible by 8, since each byte is 8 bits...

Edit: Assuming standard-size bytes and no parity or error bits, of course.

Thrudd:
In direct data transmission there should be start and stop blocks and error correcting bits BUT a minimum of seven bits for optimal text transfer could be used if retransmission is not an issue.
