I don't get what makes Breckinridge more obscure than other failed presidential candidates, though.

None of my history classes went that far back. Then again I remember taking an ancient history class, but don't remember much from it.

I learned about it in Western Civ. Although I only remembered the year because it is one of those years that shows up on a test. Like 410 and 476. And whatever year it is the Vandals sack Rome, I forgot.

The fall of Constantinople, often taken to define the end of the Middle Ages; or the invention of the printing press (in the west) by Gutenberg?

Nah, the end of the Hundred Years War, when the French retook Bordeaux from the English - trumps both the others.

Sorry, but I'm going to go with the fall of the Byzantine / Eastern Roman Empire, which signified the end of any Roman nation being a world power (although it had been weakened greatly near the end) being more important than another war between the French and English.

Wasn't the end of the Roman empire a good thing? My understanding is that all the Romans achieved was getting in the way of everyone else's progress. Kinda like the old Perth City Council of the ancient civilisations.

BURN HIM!

Do you have any IDEA what was lost in the Sack of Constantinople? Its on par with the annihilation of Bahgdad by Tamerlane for "most bitter losses of history", it cost us one of the only links backwards in time to Rome before its demolition, it might have been benighted and going through the doldrums at the time but if the Crusaders hadn't burned it to the ground and stolen all of its stuff to make their renaissance houses look better We might have seen a completly different map of the Middle East.

The Crusaders sacked Constantinople in the 13th century, we're talking about a completely different historical event.

Also Rome still sucks. The Catholic church is also a remnant of the Roman empire after all.
