Do you ride something other than a road bike? If you ride a road bike on a long enough trip you'll pretty much be forced to learn how to grip the bars a few ways just to keep constant pressure from making your hands sorta numb. I used to ride mountain and cruiser bikes as a kid so transitioning to a road bike was kinda awkward at times but I got over it fast.

Well, I probably shouldn't have said numbness since that's not really a universal condition (sure as hell used to happen to me though), but plenty of people at least find one position uncomfortable on a long enough ride. The other thing is a lot of road bikes ape racing designs so you end up with really low handlebars that encourage a lot of forward lean. That's fine when you're going all out but kinda shitty if you're going at a saner pace since you can end up putting a lot of pressure on your hands that way. Having a few different hand positions can help keep it from sucking quite so bad.
