I know "coke" gets used a lot generically when ordering a soda at restaurants, I do it myself. Very occasionally, a Pepsi based franchise will get in trouble for not correcting the customer on this point. However, using it as the generic term in regular conversation isn't something I've seen.

EDIT: @ E. Spaceman (below). I once saw a letter to the editor of Time magazine from a writer in Atlanta claiming that aluminum Pepsi cans weren't recyclable, so that's why you should buy Coke instead. They take this shit seriously.

Katie once explained this to me! Coca Cola is from Atlanta and it has such a grip on the market there that people often forget that there are other brands, hence everything being an "xy coke" and from there on it probably expanded. Is this silly and does not actually make sense? Yeah, but that is why it happens.

In other news, the weather here continues to suck incredible amounts, we are going into mid september and it is still hot as balls with even worse humidity.

I went to the supermarket, it should not be this fucking hot ever.

For me, in the UK, coke is the generic, even when I am offering someone Pepsi; pop is a fizzy fruit drink, soda goes in whisky (not if you're doing it right, of course).

Coke was also the degassified coal used to heat my childhood home...

The coke thing in the south is not just a generic term for "cola" is is a generic term for all sodas. I think a lot of people order a Coke and are fine to receive a Pepsi. I know from visiting Steve's family that Oklahoma does the "everything is a coke" thing too. I have heard the exchanges
"Can I get you a coke"?
"yes I'll have Sprite"
and
"What can I get you"
"A small Coke please"
"What kind?"
"Root beer"

I should really find pictures of my old cat. Snaggle toothed (and several missing) and a lop sided jaw due to surviving getting caught in a car engine and she wormed her way into being a house cat during the healing period. She apparently decided afterwards she deserved luxury comforts and got so damn fat.

I used to have a cat, was my favourite cat in the world. He would wrap around my neck and go to sleep as a kitten...and then continue to do so as a cat, and would suck on your blankets while you slept.

His name was Huggly Wuggly Lubby Dubby Cutey Putey Kitteny Pitteny Poo Awwdabooboo Chrysanthemum Barnes the Cute the Second, or Boo for short.
