The Seldom Killer:
Oh I dunno. Combats can look good if worn in the right way. Not that I'm holding them up as contemporary style icons but consider Tank Girl and Aisha from The Losers.
Probably telling that my style advice is derived from comic books though.
nekowafer:
I love them on guys but then I have a thing for the military look in general. My boyfriend has a cadet hat and pants like those and even combat boots. And some military-inspired jackets.
Admittedly they don't work on everyone. What Linds said will work on like 95% of guys. Only please never get any pleat-front pants - they look awful on anybody. I thought that was an 80s/90s thing but while shopping for dress pants for the boy I found that they still manufacture those atrocities.
Lines:
UGH pleat fronts. Those were required for a uniform for a job I had as a teenager and I refused to wear them. I refuse to ever wear those things, they are hideous and give people old lady hips.

It's ridiculous around here. I cannot find flat-front dress pants to save my life, and I refuse to wear pleats. I am not an old accountant!
Ballard:
The military look can be excellent. I wear Docs most days of the week, I love old school military jackets, etc.
Cargo pants are never fashionable. They are for utility. Hence cargo pants. The same combat boots with some nice jeans that don't look like a a bag with external pockets will look infinitely nicer.
