What makes them boat shoes, exactly? They look like loafers with some decorative lacing, mostly. Did the laces help them stay on when you wore them on a boat? Is it handy to be able to slide them on and off quickly?

I think the idea that they are typically made out of canvas w/ a grippy rubber sole is generally what made them boat-ready. Remember that they were invented before shoes made of anything but leather were a rarity.

Waterproof canvas + grippy, white or gum soles + seems around the top of the front of the shoe so the water doesn't get in so easily makes them boat shoes I think.

See, boat shoes have been around for freaking ages. My grandad had boat shoes because he actually had and used a boat. So he got shoes for the purpose. Having boat shoes because the people in Topman wear them...does not compute.

Another reason why I don't really want to get them is that I don't think its right, as I said before, to be able to switch wardrobes with my father. Sure he dresses well, but I don't want to get there quite yet.

I also defected and went against my self-made promise circa 2008 and now wear basically skinny jeans. I mean, I keep telling myself they're not because they say "Slim Fit" on the inside and they don't properly stick to me (after all, men do actually have genitals) but I apparently jumped on the bandwagon.

Also, is there such a thing as too many band t-shirts? I don't get the "don't wear a t-shirt of the same band  you're seeing in concert" thing.

I never heard of boat shoes until I was in high school and watched a cartoon that used the term.  Where I grew up what you describe would have been called bobos.  It would not have been a compliment.

I'm not sure why I find it douchey, but I do.

On that same vein though, if I go to a sporting event, I'll be sure to wear the shirt or hat of the team I'm cheering for. Figure that one out.

I'm not saying its the worst thing in the world, I actually think I'm over thinking it. And yeah they could. But I just don't need boat shoes.

Thats exactly my argument - you go to a football game and wear their shirt. You go to a gig wearing the band t-shirt and somehow thats wrong?
But hey its all subjective.

If you already have that band's shirt, why not? Who gives a crap. Wearing a shirt you BOUGHT at that particular concert is a bit silly, but whatever, what else are you going to do with it?

Tuck it into your belt so you don't lose it in the mosh.
I don't wear the shirt of bands that I am going to see, I wear shirts of other, similar artists, although lately I've been removing my band shirts from my wardrobe. For some reason I'm getting sick of advertising other bands? I've started replacing them with comic book shirts and shirts i've bought off the internet. I think it's better this way.

Now I only buy band shirts from concerts I go to. (I own 3 that I bought in a store which are now pajama shirts.) Gives you a chance to support them and if they're at the booth to tell them they are awesome. I don't go to concerts often so if I already own the cd, I buy the shirt. Otherwise I buy the cd. I just like talking to the musicians! Some have been quite nice.

Unless your band sucks, then I don't go to your merch table.

I love band tees. I miss mine. I lost a lot of weight and gave my mom my old wardrobe (a crap ton of black tees, mostly band tees, and Tripp pants), then got a whole new wardrobe, then gained all the weight back. So I have dozens of tees that don't fit me and only a dozen or so that fit, and few of those have anything to do with music.

I did just get a really awesome Smashing Pumpkins Zero tee at a thrift store the other day.

band t-shirts scream "TEENAGER" a bit too loudly for my tastes these days, so I've pretty much removed them all from my wardrobe. I think they might still be in a box somewhere, but I really don't 'care. they're all like anti-flag and nofx shirts and shit, as well as some other random junk that i would never ever wear again

the only band shirt i still rep is my The Mean Reds shirt because they were one of the greatest teenage bands to ever live and they sadly broke up before anyone was able to give a shit besides me and few other people.

RIP The Mean Reds

I think it is pretty silly to wear a shirt of the band you are going to see to their concert.  I mean, you bought a ticket and showed up, there is a really good chance that you like the band, what are you trying to prove by wearing a band t-shirt, too?

That is different from sporting events where you need to specify which side you are rooting for so that you don't get beat up/know who to beat up.

What if you're only there to see one of the bands? I went to see KMFDM, but Angelspit was opening for them and they were SO awful. If I'd had a KMFDM shirt I would have worn it so no one would have mistaken me for an Angelspit fan.

While this is a gross generalization, most people go to a concert for the headliner, not the opening act.  I am sure that you were safe from such awful assumptions.

Boooo, Angelspit are rad.  Was the sound crap, or did you just not like their music?  By contrast, I find anything by KMFDM to be ridiculous to the point of self-parody.

I've gotten into a habit of only buying band shirts at concerts. I couldn't get myself to get one at a record store or like one of those shady stores The obvious exception is bands that've broken up. But, there's just something about getting the shirt at a given venue--there's a story behind it.

Wait, what? Since when is Clutch a bro band? All of the guys I've seen wearing clutch shirts look like they would be more at home in a garage than at a kegger.

I mean, I guess some Clutch was on Bam Margera's show once or twice (I guess he's a friend of the band?), but I doubt many people bothered to find out about the band from that.

My newest favourite way to fight Canadian winter in style: oxfords with wools socks.

It's about -5C right now so I'm rockin' slicked back 50s boy hair, a thrifted cream coloured cowl neck sweater, pseudo-tweed brown blazer, super skinny raw denim jeans and my brown oxfords with greyish-blue wool socks peepin' out. I feel pretty good right now. Wish I had a working camera on hand.

Yah, I always found that weird, too, Dovey. I wore really dark raw demin on the bottom and a much lighter denim shirt/jacket (the one I bought in Austin, Sam) on top with a big scarf and brown oxfords. I made it work.
