Ladybug:
I can tolerate beaters (though I hate the nickname) if it's really hot or something and you're mostly just dressing for comfort than for looking good. And I can tolerate sweatpants, but it's obviously not something that makes you look really styllsh or whatever. I just don't think it's as horrible-looking as some people seem to think, but I may just be desensitized, though, because everyone wears them all the frickin' time here when just running quick errands or whatever.
The combination I'm not so sure about, though. Sounds very KFed or something.
ETA: Yeah, my opinion on beaters were for men. They can look really really great on women if you have the body for them, but they can also look really bad if you don't, as with most clothes.
Victorinia:
Beaters are acceptable, but not great, on men, and adorable on most women.
I don't think that sweatpants should ever be seen outside of a) the gym b) one's home. There are lots of pants that are equally comfy and less hideous.
David_Dovey:
Beaters on women if you got no boobs is A-OK, if you ask me.
There is a right way for a guy to look good in a beater but I can't quite put my finger on how right now. I'm sure I've seen it though.
Sweatpants outside the house mean you have given up on life.
axerton:
The correct way for a guy to do beaters is: Jeans, blunstone boots (or equivilant), relatively short hair, facial hair optional, lean but muscley build.
otherwise known as looking like a tradey (the good type of tradey, not the fat guy who's overalls aren't quite over all)
Also the wearing of a button up shirt over the beater means easy transformation from highly casual tradey to quite acceptably dressed guy.
ViolentDove:
A female friend of mine once wore a massive beater with a belt as a dress. It was pretty hot.
