The dress is nice with the sweater, (do cover up the bare arms) but I would posit is a little short for an interview.  You're almost certainly going to be sitting across from somebody and too much leg is distracting.  Try to be just a smidgen more formal with a little bit longer hemline.  Also, if you think the humidity won't turn you into a frizz farm, your curls are entirely too wonderful not to have down if possible.

I was worried about the length:/ It doesn't read quite as short if I am not wearing heels, but the only flat shoes I have are leather sandals and I figure that's a bit too informal. Trying to figure whether I need to go out and find a new dress, or some hideous flats. Or just hope for the best.

Maybe if you take some tights to wear underneath the dress with you and put them on after the 40 minute drive there, but before you go into the building? Then you won't get stupidly hot from wearing tights in summer in the car, but still have tights for the interview?

I would suggest a new dress if it's in your budget and then go with heels.   The worry about the the length is less a worry about you getting a male interviewer (although there are some stone pervs out there) but I can tell you almost certainly, if you get a middle aged woman interviewing you she's going to have an instant negative reaction to it.   I'll give you two examples to my line of reasoning here:

1) I worked for three years in an office that was about 7:3 female to male. I learned stuff about the nature of women in that time that shocked me.  Catty, petty, mean, nasty bitches.  Not all of them, by any means, but enough of them, and some that I wouldn't have expected based on their dealings with me.   "Did you see her in that tight sweater today?  She's such a whore, she's just trying to get Donny to pay attention to her."   That's an actual quote I heard once while waiting to get coffee in a conversation between what I thought was two sweet ladies in their fifties.  Once they hit about 35 it seems like they get nasty regarding anyone younger and prettier.   Standard disclaimer statement: I know, I'm making a giant stereotype that has countless counter examples to disprove it.  I'm making a broad brush generalization based on non-scientific observation.  I'm not trying to smear all women

2) We recently a hired a young lady with a very nice figure on my floor.   She's not the first pretty girl we've had working there and probably won't be the last, but she wears short, tight skirts and push-up bras and everybody has noticed her.  All the guys are like "Who's that?" or "Wow, she's hot."  The women have much stronger reactions.  The women that I have talked to about her have all decided that she's dumb as a rock, sleeping with her boss (who is a giant fat moose old enough to be her father, I doubt she's sleeping with him), and was only hired because he's a perv who wants some eye candy and an office quicky.  The other, less prevalent rumor about her is that she's only working because she's fishing for a husband, and as soon as she finds somebody to take care of her, she'll be gone.  I've talked to her a couple times and never had so much as a hint of impropriety come off her.   So she's already labeled the office slut, and as far as I know, hasn't done anything wrong.

So my rather long winded cautionary tales there are meant to illustrate that you want to be thought of as the right person for the job who just happens to be young, pretty, and female, and not that you got the job because you're young, pretty, and female.

Clothes-wise what Manda is wearing is fine but the effect is ruined by the hair, which somehow makes her seem on the wrong side of casual/scruffy. I don't know anything about hair so I don't know what to suggest. I think Lunchy is right.

Guys. I'm in the market for a decent set of hightops or sneakers or something comfy foot-wise.

Pre-reqs:
Must be black or lime green or some awesome combination of both.
Must be size 13 and wide if possible.
Must be hard wearing and comfortable as I stand all day at work.

Does anyone know of anything that fits that?

I would say any higher end skateboarding shop would carry these, since every time I go to look at new shoes I immediately wretch at the neon colors on everything. I wear size 12 and really end up buying a pair of shoes every 2-2.5 years just because of how picky I am. I would say any basketball or athletic shoe would be much more comfortable for standing all day in, but skate shops would be my first suggestion for the whole neon green aspect. I just bought white pumas after the most infuriating footlocker employee wasted much of my afternoon.

me: "Hi do you have these [specific black nike basketball shoes] in a 12?"
her: "I'll go look. [...] Well we have the white ones in a 10."
me: "..."

So I am most likely going to start working as a bagger at a grocery store soon. The uniform is khaki pants and white button down, tie optional. I'm in search of shoes that are both comfortable for standing in for long periods of time but also not really shitty looking.
Would something like boat shoes be comfortable for that long?

The biggest trick to any job where standing for 8+ hours is involved, is to just learn to shift your weight from leg to leg as you go, if you have any kind of polish-ready work shoe, you should be fine in terms of comfort. I would say that if looks are your concern, find a pair that fit you well with an insole, if you are finding it hard to stand for prolonged periods of time.

I used to carry moleskines, but I doodle and draw so much it got too expensive. Now I have super cheap sketchbooks instead! Not as classy, but they'll have to do.

This is why I carry a small, less expensive version of a Moleskine! Same size, but a bit thicker (more pages!), and about 1/2 the price. Also, rebinding old moleskines is a good trick, too.

I'd never go into a job interview with a skirt/dress hem hitting so high above the knee. It's a lovely dress, but it's just not appropriate for a job interview, imho.

Also, moleskines! Why are moleskines so popular! I refuse to buy a journal that is so precious and fragile. I had one a few years ago and it disintegrated from a little quotidian writing, (like two week's worth) and it just made me feel like I had big dirty monster hands or something. Journals should be sturdy! Frankly nothing beats a regular composition book for me.

Yeah I can't get over spending big buxx on a moleskine when I got my little ideas jotting book at an office supply shop for $2. It is red and sort of vinyl covered with a little elastic closure. I don't need 'quality' paper to scribble shit on.

the moleskines i buy and carry around are actually yearly planners which are both tiny enough to fit into my pocket and have a really nice layout that i love and haven't really seen duplicated in any other planners - they have your blank week on one side of the page and then just a blank page for notes on the other. i have been buying one consistently every year for the last 3-4 years. also, because they are yearly planners, i obviously don't buy a new one for 12-18 months. they're also durable as heck and really do last the 12 or 18 months. $20 once a year for something that i love and works really well seems a good deal to me!

You honestly have no idea how many types of papers I have just lying around. (Either they are left over from art school or I got them for free from work.) Seriously, I probably have a lifetime supply, so yes, for me rebinding a sketchbook saves me money. Also then you can fill it with whatever paper you want.

I have one of the smaller portrait format journals in red:

I don't really like drawing in tiny books, so it's mostly for writing down ideas or notes. There are a few doodles in there, though.

Tania, I got one of those last year, a little red one which was a hardcover and it was brilliant. It was small enough to fit in all my various bags, and the hard cover meant that it held up well being in various bags every day. Also that blank notes page each week was good to record how much I got paid every day, and which assignments were due that week, and to do lists and all that jazz.

The planner I have this year is awesome, but too big to be conveniently portable, so it just stays at home. Next year I will go back to that little moleskine planner again

Okay, so I posted a dress a few pages back. Strapless, black, super cute? I went back and bought it in pale pink and intend to wear it to a wedding in September (which is Spring here). I figured that with shoes that aren't too high, and some kind of cardi or wrap/shawl thing, it would be perfect. What kind of wrap/shawl/cardi thing would you guys suggest? It is a pale pink (I'll post a photo when I can, but it's the type of pink you dress baby girls in) and the exact same style as the black one.

No, I don't really want heaps of colour. It's a wedding and although the people getting married are young, I still want to dress fairly conservatively. Especially since the dress is on the shorter scale.

Cream would probably work well and shoes to match probably wouldn't be too difficult to find either.

You could still do cream or white shoes but I reckon pale teal and pale pink are amazing together. You could also do a light grey? Maybe add some peach?

Even if you go with cream cardi/shawl you could add a bit of colour on your nails:

Look how well colours go with pale pink! Aw yeah!

So apparently I'm going to a wedding in October, on the 10th. I don't own a suit and/or a tie. what should I do?

Is it okay to wear slacks and a button down shirt with no tie to a wedding?

Why can't you buy a suit? It doesn't have to be a nice one. I'm pretty sure AoM would have a guide to what colors work for what occasions, you could probably find one that can work for pretty much any time you might need one.

Wear a tie. Wear a tie. Wear a motherfucking tie.

if you're not sure, overdressed is almost always better than underdressed. a guy in a suit at a casual affair does not look nearly as bad or draw nearly as much attention as a casual guy at a really, really fancy gathering. the former still at least shows that you put time and effort into looking good, whereas the latter is almost always going to make you look thoughtless and inconsiderate no matter what (not necessarily saying that you are, that's just how fancy occasion etiquette tends to be). like mctaggart said you can always take things like suit jackets or ties off but you can't necessarily make them appear when you need them.

Maybe you guys would be less broke if you didn't spend all your money on ties. Ever thought about that?

(Don't take the previous post too seriously, this is coming from the girl with two giant ikea bags full of shoes and no money.)

I have lots of ties; but as I only wear a tie 3 or 4 times a year, they are not much use to me.  I would send SWitty a tie if he's prepared to take pot luck on the design.

In fact I was at a wedding today (they hired my choir to sing something), so today I wore a tie, briefly!  Lots of the guests wore kilts (and knives, probably dummy, tucked into their long socks); I wouldn't suggest doing that unless you had good reason to.

I'm broke as fuck and I own so many ties that one of my wedding presents was a goddamn tie carousel thingy.

Yeah, I got this crazy battery operated thing hanging up in my closet that spins around so I don't actually have to burn any calories looking for ties.    I'm anal enough that I actually have them organized by the principal color of the tie and get upset when one color starts getting too popular.  So I go buy more ties.

I'm sure that I need meds of some sort.  :/

I don't mean "broke as fuck" in a "I don't have any extra money" sense. I mean "broke as fuck" in a "I have $25 to last me two weeks until payday" sense.

That said, I do have a full tank of gas which should last that long, so I suppose I could get a tie instead of food for a day or two.

Which is probably what I'll do.

Also for the record the last wedding I went to the bride was wearing jeans and the husband was wearing cargo shorts. Just sayin'.

man yeah, that is like the cardinal rule of dressing (the being overdressed > being underdressed). there was a comedy festival thing here in town, and after there was an after party at a swanky hotel (with free bar yay) and there were some dudes in black suits and ties and ladies in kinda fancy dresses... and then some people like me in a nice blouse and knee length jorts. my whole crew arrived be-denimed though so it wasn't like i was all by myself in the casual-ness (at least i wasn't wearing a t-shirt) but it was still kind of awkward

Fuck the summer seriously. I get heat stroke very easily and therefore must sacrifice fashion for function.

I don't like to wear dresses very much now that I have ultra short hair, so I mostly have to wear shorts and a tank top all summer and I hate it I want to wear pants and button downs and jeans and tshirts and boots.
