I think that particular bag warrants the term murse, because a really ugly bag deserves a really stupid word. I wouldn't want to tarnish the term manbag with that monstrosity.

admittedly it would be the only thing in the messenger bag and that's sort of overkill but what other option do I have

Wearing pants with decent-sized pockets.

I think even if I wore guy jeans where I could fit everything I could ever desire to have with me into the pockets I'd just be uncomfortable with everything bulging and knocking together

on the topic of manbags:

I currently carry around my stuff in a black Oakley backpack. It's durable, comfortable to wear, has a bunch of small side pockets for my allergy meds, phone charger, condoms, cigarettes, sunglasses, etc. Inside it has two sleeve pockets for books or a laptop and it comfortably fits a giant Fiji water bottle that I refill and carry with me every day. It's an excellent bag for utility but it makes me look like a juvenile dumbass.

I've been fawning for months over this bag:

It looks like a duffel in these pictures but slung over the shoulder it's a pretty standard-sized messenger bag. It's gorgeous (and expensive) but I'm sacrificing pretty much all utility here. It's got one general pocket and then two smaller buttoned pockets on the outside. There are no zippers or buttons, and the only way to keep it fully closed is to loop those leather straps through. The large water bottle I carry would take up at least half the bag. If I kept a laptop in it I'd have to invest in a nice neoprene sleeve because there's no separate area for it.

I know we've had the style vs. utility debate before but there has to be some way to get a little of both. Suggestions?

scarred:
yes i have this exact same problem - i use a black backpack and it's amazing but not very fashion-conscionable. i need something that is pretty and utilitarian but it also needs to be comfy for cycling.
