Flashin' thread,

Hello there, men of the fashion thread! Do you sometimes take a piece of fabric and knot it around your neck in a complicated matter so that it forms a succession of triangle shapes that suitably hide the middle of your torso? Are you enthusaistic about the appearance of those pieces of fabric?

Allow me to recommend to you the website of Messrs. Mountain & Sackett of New York, the makers of the world's only 100% handmade tie, who offer their wares on the Inter Net for quite a reasonable price. Particularly of note is their selection of Regimental Ties, of which I am wearing the Somerset Light Infantry model right now.

Did you find this post helpful? y/n

What the hell kind of regiment is called "the Penguins"?

I would wear some of those ties, though, if I could afford them.

The Queen's Own Hussar tie is very smart. If a handsome young gentleman were to wear it with a nice crisp white shirt and a well-tailored navy suit I do believe I would become all afluster and perhaps bat my eyelashes at him in a manner that suggests that I find him handsome and charming.

I like that the site shows you not only pictures of what various knots look like, but also how to do it, too. Not that I wear ties very often, but I do have some and I kind of forgot how to tie them and the one that is tied has been in its current knot for a good 5-6 years. (It will probably stay in that knot, but the others can be tied in other ways now!)

With a knee-length black skirt and a black and white striped top (pretty basic, short-sleeved, with some "extra" fabric around the neckline), which shoes? I'm leaning heavily towards the first pair, but my mom and brother said the second.

Fashion thread, hi! I have a make-up question for you. I've really been wanting to do this heavy lip color thing with casual clothes and not just for late-night fun things, but everyone I have asked (my mom) says it will look dumb. Is this ridiculous? Please tell me if I look ridiculous and inappropriate for daytime things (such as walking outside): 1 and 2.

2 is actually so you can tell me how to cut my hair, 'cause I have job interviews coming up and do not want to look 14-year-old-boy sloppy.

You look like a 1940's starlet with the lip color. I like it a lot! It maybe wouldn't work if you were totally scrub fest like baggy tshirt or something, but it looks nice with what I can see of the top you have on.

I don't have any hair advice though, it's kind of hard to tell what your hair is doing there

It makes you look kind of 1950's, especially with the short hair. I think it looks pretty good, anyway.

Maybe you could just go to a decent hairdresser and ask them to tidy the hair up a little.  The style of it suits you, it is just a little unruly at the moment is all.

As for these people telling you the heavy lip colour is a bad idea, I have no idea what these miscreants' problem(s) is/are.  It is a pretty good idea, and looks nice as is, but for my mind the colour needs slight tweaking for it to be perfect.  I am not sure if the lighting in your room is throwing off the tones, and I'm not 100% on this, but I think perhaps it should be a little darker to match your hair more?  Darker red, I mean, like more toward a maroon colour.

I was reading this totally dumb magazine one time at a doctors office, like Cosmo or something, and in it one woman agreed to wear bright red lipstick every day for a month. She said felt more "together" and powerful after she stopped feeling silly in it. I promise I don't really put much stock into anything Cosmo says, but it seems like a fun dare to see if it actually does change how you're perceived.

I have things about lip colour: people do not wear it right. You seem to have a good shade there, so stick with that. Ways to keep it from looking ridiculous include wearing lip liner which will make sure that it doesn't feather around the edges. As well, find a good base - something that keeps the colour from drying out your lips and becoming faded (this can make it look splotchy).

The idea of a bold lip colour is great, but it's all about the execution!

I kinda feels like it needs to be balanced out by something on/around your eyes, like longer lashes, more eyebrow (thin, but bold), and maybe some eyeshadow (maybe not all at once). Judging from the shade of lipstick you used, I think you can do this without looking like a clown (I have seen many aspiring clowns).

I have really dark lips naturally, also with my face shape bold colours look silly. However, the biggest rule of thumb to lipcolour is if you're wearing lipstick, don't play up your other features as much. Either play up your eyes or your lips but not both because otherwise you tend to look like a lady of the night(which is alright sometimes!).

Honestly, imho the only people that really pull off bright noticable lip colour are more round faces, but eh.

Yeah, I think the rule is if you're wearing bright lipstick, you should wear a tiny amount of blush and neutral/no eyeshadow. (Eyeliner and mascara are ok if they are black/brown.) If you're wearing bright eyeshadow, you don't wear blush and a lipstick or a translucent gloss (if you want) that is very close to your actual lip color. And then bright blush is best with neural eyes and lips.

I like the lipstick, Yunior!

Thanks, dudes. BrittanyMarie, I definitely think feeling put-together is part of why I like it so much. There is also a part of me that is kind of the most shy girl, and heavy lip color sort of runs a little contrary to that and empowering in that way, too. It's just very much like a, "Hey look at my FACE, guys" and that's a pretty courageous invitation to make. We'll see how it works out IRL, though.

Yesss, exact same feelings here. There's something really daunting about bright lip colour - and not just the fact that you can look like a tit wearing it. I can wear all the eye makeup in the world and not feel self-conscious, but I rarely even think about putting lipstick on.

Anyway, good luck with it, Yunior. Let us know how it goes!

I am probably alone in this, but I am not a huge fan of dark lipstick and bright red lipstick. It looks like you could easily pull it off and look good, and other people would say you look good, but I would say that you look good in spite of that.

I think that there is something very black-and-white-movie beautiful about you in those pictures. The color is flattering to you and your features are so petite and dainty that it isn't all "Whoa! Giant red lips!" Wear the lipstick. You look great.

Ok, fashion thread, what do we think of this dress? The style of it mainly. Does it seem to suit me?

I would have bought it, but it was a bit too... spacious in the chest area. And they didn't have the next size down. But I've decided I need a 'liittle black dress', and if this is a good style for me, I'll continue the search for a size that fits.

Thanks guys. Won't be back on 'til tomorrow, so any reply I make will be delayed.

The little black dress is a good style for pretty much every lady, you just got to get one that flatters your body type.  Obviously getting one that is too spacious in the chest area causes probs, but at least the length of that one looks good.  Not too short, but not super long either.

I dunno, the point of a lbd is to work for every occasion. That one is a little too much like a slip or a nightgown. If it was either in a different fabric or had wider straps and more structure to it I'd like it a lot more.

Yeah, I'm not sure that the loose cotton is really what you need to be looking for there. Maybe a different neckline? I feel like very pointy V necklines can make boobs look weird and pointy sometimes. The length is really good though, it hits your leg at a flattering spot:)

I have the worst pictures of my awesome new summer dress! It somehow manages to be loose and relaxed up top and tight and huggy on the bottom at the same time without any seaming at all :)
The only slight downside is that it is a halter top.

The straps on the dress I was wearing there are fairly wide. Wider than the straps on most things I wear.

I really do want a LBD, but I'm not really up on the whole dress fashion thing. What kind of neckline would be better? Bear in mind I have relatively little in the way of a chest, and I'd like to keep it that way, so I need something that looks good on what I've got without making them look bigger.

BrittanyMarie, what do you mean by structure? I really have no idea what I'm doing here, so any input you guys can offer is awesome.

If anyone has pictures of things that would be helpful, I'd give distant internet hugs in return.

That one is a little too much like a slip or a nightgown.

My first thought too.  For me it was the frilly edges that gave that impression; I would try for something with a simpler look to it - there should be nothing about the lbd that distracts, however slightly, from you.

I like the neckline in the photo you posted above, though. People without much boobage can easily wear low-cut dresses without looking trashy (I'm jealous), so I'd try and rock something plunging if I were you!

I think any of the cuts other than the second in that picture from chowburger would be good! The second is just a little too informal to be all-occasion and I think the lack of waistline looks unflattering on just about anyone.
The other three are super cute! They have the structure Brittany mentioned too, with the more solid fabric and more complicated seaming.

That fourth LBD is basically the dress of my dreams. I just need to find it in meat life (or sew it I suppose).

What are people's thoughts on pearls with a LBD for formal events? Is it still chic, or too old lady?

Also, no to the white, maybe to the red. Just think of the time you would have to spend cleaning the white ones to keep them, well, white.

Pearls are ultra classy.  I wear mine as often as I can get away with it.  They can turn a drab outfit/dress into ultimate femininity.  Love them!

I looked at the McQueens expecting to see shoes modeled after a '68 GT390 Mustang. I am disappointed.

What are people's thoughts on pearls with a LBD for formal events? Is it still chic, or too old lady?

I'm definitely a fan of old-lady chic, but I think pearls go beyond that. They're pretty much the ultimate in classy.

StaedlerMars, I kind of hate those white shoes, but I think the red ones are neat!

Guys, I'm thinking of getting new shoes?

or the red one here

Those red ones are nice, but I think if I would go with either the eggplant McQueens, bark/lichen Romare His or lichen Rollins.

Hey fashion thread, what do you commonly do with belts, do you put em through all the belt loops or do you let it hang?

I put my belt through as many belt loops as it will go through and let it hang after that.
