I just left the courthouse from jury duty. Their video said I was performing a vital civic duty, but there were no trials needing jurors today so I just sat in a room for 6 hours.

That sucks! Did you literally just sit or did they let you read a book, or something, or what? I don't know how these things work.

They told me to bring a book.

It was vaguely disappointing, since I expected to have a lawyer going all Perry Mason on me, but at least I don't have to worry about missing work because the trial is dragging on.

So, I want to do something to help out Haiti. I feel stupid just donating $10 via text, when I know that I can raise $10,000+ if I did some sort of event. Except that my normal means of doing this is though a club my mother is with and I don't know if they'd be too interested. St. Louis is the Zombie Squad headquarters, and if you go to their page right now, under featured product is a picture of my boyfriend's good friend, and basically we sort of have connections there that I am tempted to try to go through. But I'm afraid that if I go up to some place that I've never worked through and say "hey! Let me organize/run/host a charity event in your name to raise money for Haiti!" they'll say no, since they don't know how fucking awesome I am at them.

I don't know what to do!

My exam is gone, and I have absolutely no idea how I did. I mean, I did badly but the degree of badness is yet to be established - maybe I just held on by the skin of my teeth, maybe I waffled irrelevantly for eight pages. We'll find out soon enough.

On the upside I ordered a cow-shaped draught excluder a few days ago and it arrived today! Also I had a really nice evening with my college mum, because I just went back to her room after the exam finished and ended up having dinner with her then hanging out til she and her friend went clubbing. It meant I was wandering back to my own room at 10.30 with a jar of pesto, three cloves of garlic, two batteries and a cow-shaped draught excluder but hey, people do weird things here.

ETA: I can't believe I forgot about this because it's a pretty big deal, but my ice hockey coach has angina :( It seems really unfair because he's fit, he exercises regularly and eats healthily, his cholesterol was always fine - there wasn't anything to indicate he was at risk, but I guess it often goes like that. So basically he can't coach us any more, which is bad for several reasons including the fact that we've now got league matches and it really kind of matters...

Well, I know how that sucks :~) from personal experience.  But none of us is a statistic, and bad things can happen - or  not - to any of us.  That's not a reason to let up on looking after ourselves, though.

So today at work when they turned the heat back on steam flooded into all of the labs! Not sure how clear it is, but this is what my lab looked like after it had been clearing out for about 10 minutes.

We were forced out of the building for a while and eventually my roommate and I just decided to hit the bar for a few drinks and go home.

Dear blog thread,

I agree, 2010 is totally shit so far. Not so bad: my back window had a giant hole in it this morning and it's gonna be over $625 to fix
Very bad: another fucking young person was struck by a car and left for dead. in january in north dakota! if the car didn't kill him, the cold certainly would have. this time the guy is in serious condition, with a fractured skull, fractured arm, fractured vertebrae... they hit him and then proceeded to continue to run him over. this guy is a local fixture at all the good shows, a very punk fucking rock dude who seemed pretty rad. i've been to a few parties with him, not many, but whatever. what the hell? this is the second time someone i know has gotten hit by a fucking car and the car took off. ridiculous. fucking ridiculous.

also i agree with his dad. fuck victim blaming

That is awful, Britt. I read the article, and a dude who works for a floral company cannot be bad. I hope he wakes up okay.

In other news my 2010 is turning out pretty okay, I had my 6 months staff review and got a promotiony type thing today as well as the pay rise I got last week.

I already checked our local Red Cross charter, and so far they aren't doing anything other than telling people to donate. But I will check out this site too, thanks!

I don't want to just donate money. The thing is I could either donate $10, $100, everything in my bank account and it wouldn't even come close to what I could do.

a punk rocker who works at a floral company! there are a lot of pissed off hardcore kids around here who keep saying things like the police better find out who did it before we do... i'm imagining a warriors type thing with all the heavily tattooed black haired twenty-somethings toting around smashed whiskey bottles. he is the boy i have never seen wearing sleeves... all ripped off, with a denim vest with all kinds of patches on it. his band covered the dicks.

I've started planning this crazy and reckless travel-adventure where I spend almost a year travelling from somewhere near the top of Alaska all the way south through Canada and the main bits of the U.S. then into Mexico and through Central & South America right down to Patagonia. Without catching any aeroplanes apart from the ones to and from Australia. I've had just such a ridiculously ambitious notion in my mind for a while but I've actually started buying guidebooks and figuring out itineraries and calculating how many thousands of Australian dollars I can save up over the next 18 months. So I guess maybe if you're in the Americas I might be coming to your neighbourhood in 2011 or 2012? Crazy.

I just ordered my foundation uniform for the ballet show! Leotard, shoes and tights, we get a more complicated costume depending on what dances we're involved in. I'm so excited!

Less exciting is the fact that today I absolutely have to finish unpacking, writing letters, writing cheques, booking doctors appointments and all the other boring stuff that will just get pushed aside once term gets going properly. Meh. And it's raining.

Edit: I'm off to meet the director and producer of another play this evening! I'm probably going to be stage-managing it, pending massive personality clash disaster when we meet. The girl who was my ASM on the last play is the ASM on this one too so that'll be awesome! Still massive mystery as to why they asked me, though; I don't know anyone who is involved except the ASM and I don't think she was involved when they asked me.  :?

EtaEta: This will be the last edit, I swear. Just wanted to tell all the haters that I just booked an NHS appointment and there was one forty five minutes later. Nationalised health care does not result in long wait times! At least not if all that's wrong with you is a creepy skin lurgy that's spread from your collarbone all the way down both arms and onto your hips (ohgodwhatiswrongwithmeohgod).

last night i dropped my friend off at her home after PaRtYiNg at a club.  at the stop sign leading out of her neighborhood there was a herd of like, 7 deer!  so i stopped and watched them for about a minute because they were right next to my car & deer are so fucking cool!  once i saw a car coming up behind me i drove off so they wouldn't have to sit there and wait for me while i dorked out over animals.

then suddenly the car behind me turned out to have flashing lights and it was a cop car!  pulling me over!  because sitting at a stop sign for a full minute at 2AM is super suspicious or something?

seriously why does that kind of shit always happen when i drive my drunk friends home??

Magic! The rash has gone!

(OK it hasn't really but thanks for the voodoo hehe.)

I know it isn't anything serious really, but she made me sufficiently worried that I need to hear a qualified doctor tell me that. She made it very clear at the start of the appointment that she couldn't diagnose me, and then proceeded to attempt to do just that, which just made me more worried :(

Anyway. In about an hour I'll turn out to have eczema or something.

Horrible lurgy update: they're not sure what it is, but I'm not going to die of it. I'm going to try a stronger cream and if it doesn't work then it's probably what Katie suggested it was, and therefore there's nothing I can do but wait til it goes away.

The play I'm now definitely stage managing is already awesome, and I'm really excited. It's going to be hard work though.

Doctor=>arm fixed=>back to sleep?

My boring job has been made more boring. Get this: IT department has run out of diskspace so we can't actually save any data anywhere. Which means that, as an information control and distribution outfit, we're pretty much sitting on our asses.

I'm reading Wapsi Square.

Delete all files greater than a certain size or a certain age - problem solved.

Of course, there will be a few unimaginative whingers out there, but hey!  (Refer them to their local backups...)

Speaking of backups, the 4GB memory card I ordered just arrived! Now I can back up all my uni work and stop panicking that my laptop will die with all my lecture notes and essays and basically everything on it.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."
