dear QC blog thread

fuckkkk delaware, there are like no for serious art shops here. I mean, there's an AC Moore, but it's really only got like 2 aisles, the rest is Halloween decorations and kids toys. I went looking for a nice little sketchbook and I couldn't find shit (well technically I found one but I was wary of buying it) Is it that hard to just put what quality/weight the paper is on the front of the sketchbook?

The comments are fucking gold.

Also! Some chick approached me on the ferry today. Said she swore she recognized me from somewhere and we eventually figured out that it was the Gogol Bordello show at Sasquatch this year. And now I have her number?

Is this normal?

I've just gone mad buying text books (OK not too mad, I got three for £20 including P&P) and now I'm really excited about them arriving.

On a less exciting note I have to clean the house today because my mum and John get back tomorrow evening and I've not exactly been keeping it pristine. Then I go away for the weekend! And then after that the next thing to look forwards to is starting uni.

Could be that, or it could be them trying to manipulate your expectations for salary negotiations later.  Or it could simply be them thinking out loud.  If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's don't make any assumptions about whether or not a potential employer will offer you a job until they've actually sent you a rejection or offer.

Note that this goes in both directions: never assume you have a job until they've actually sent you an offer.  In fact it's possible to still not have the job even after that (it happened to me once, the bastards) but that's very rare.

If we're honest though, retail is chimp simple work. In fact, I have a hard time really calling my old retail job 'work' because it would be more aptly described as 'attendence'.

yeah that is highly variable depending on where you work.  I'm sure there are plenty of retail jobs out there where you pretty much just stand around in a store that is empty* but most retail jobs involve tons of annoying busywork, with everything compounded by the fact that you are constantly harassed by customers who treat you like dirt.  God help the poor souls who work in a mall or big box store.

*Examples would include:
a Radioshack or UPS store (most of the time those guys don't seem to have much to do)
a store on the verge of going out of business (most stores need customers)
a mafia front

Notably, these are all minor issues, but not having to deal with people who tell you to smile is really nice!

never tell someone serving you to smile because they might have bi polar and suddenly yell "NO YOU SMILE ASSHOLE YOU'RE THE ONE ABOUT TO TAKE A NINETEEN YEAR OLD HOME YOU DIRTY OLD WANKER"

A girl I work with actually did this one day it was awesome

Also the only people I know in retail are in fashion and are always coked out of their minds, so its hard to be sympathetic. I mean, sure, it must be a hard job if the boss is selling them discount coke to get them through the day but  come on.

Well, without meaning to be overbearing or condescending, retail is more or less:

- Unpack stock.
- Prepare stock.
- Put out stock.
- If asked, direct customers to stock.
- Sell stock at till.
- Order in replacement stock.

That is chimp simple, really, just shifting something 'A' to 'B' and cycling through. Sure, you can get overworked if you are understaffed, or perhaps have the odd irritating customer. But usually it's indoor work, usually regular enough hours, predominantly quite safe, no life-or-death pressure decisions etc. I think that makes retail relatively easy.

I'm not trying to slag off anyone as a work-shy fuckwit or similar. I'm just saying, retail is retail. Simples.

I have heard retail is the worst minimum wage work you can do but so far my worst MW job was sweeping a room's worth of blood into a hole in the centre of the floor about the size of a babies head. I haven't gone into retail because I don't want to actually know if it's worse than that.

It's bad but there's no way it's the worst.  For example, excuse the pun but janitors have a really shitty job (and what you described sounded like a particularly vile form of janitor.)  And don't forget all the jobs so bad you can't even get people to do them for minimum wage, you need illegal workers.

Frankly, in my mind retail is probably one of the best minimum wage jobs.  That's not saying much though, since most minimum wage jobs suck.

My experience with Target leaves it as really the only retail outlet I'd consider working for again. Everyone was really nice, although obviously such things will vary from store to store. Still, I do tend to agree with Coward and Jhocking: retail is actually pretty simple and I've met or worked with a lot of people that have had to do much worse for a helluva lot less with considerably more risk of physical harm involved. I wouldn't work retail again simply because it's a poor fit for me. It beats the hell out of poultry processing, being a non-union roofer, or sorting garbage, though, that's for damn sure.

I work retail, yet this is probably the most emotional roller coaster I've ever had because it's a small company and the owner is, I'm pretty sure, bi-polar and will one second seem ok and then the next be yelling at you and telling you you're a moron. Case in point - this is what happened when we called to tell him the server crashed. Also, customers aren't always nice. Also if you don't know what the hell you're talking about when you're telling someone about a product, you're pretty much useless in our store.

Also, receiving stock isn't what I'd call easy if the boxes are both bigger and weigh more than you. Curse you 4'x8' foam core, curse you.

Also, receiving stock isn't what I'd call easy if the boxes are both bigger and weigh more than you.

I suppose recommending a brief training montage (complete with a catchy background track) being played until you can compete as a contender would be out of the question?

Hey, hey, hey, hey-now. Don't be mean; we don't have to be mean, 'cos, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

I flipped out of my boat today. It was a single. That means there are pontoons on the side so you don't flip over. One of the coaches said it was physically impossible to flip one of those over. I broke the laws of physics today guys.

Man, I am glad I'm finally out of retail, even though there were some fun aspects of it too. I talked to some former coworkers at Borders the other day, and that company is going to hell. They used to be very supportive of staff, lots of cool perks like a free $30 gift card each month, and just really let you develop your own style as long as you did your job and were friendly and helpful to customers.

Now they've joined the legions of retail stores where they try to control exactly how you interact with customers. You MUST use their first name if you see it on a credit card or work badge, you MUST recommend a specific book that somebody in corporate has decided is this month's hot thing (re: the publisher is paying lots of money for this service), all while trying to maintain the shelves and stock new merchandise with as few as 3 people covering a 50,000 square foot retail space. With everybody worried about getting in trouble if they don't follow all these ticky tack rules, they're afraid of approaching customers, because the only possible outcomes are they forget the script when it's a secret shopper grading their performance, or they get in trouble for not doing the other 8 parts of the job that's backed up because nobody else is there to help.

Well, no wonder their sales dropped 18% compared to last year, while B&N has only dropped 7%. They keep telling employees they can't afford more staff, but then they hire 5 new vice presidents in the last 2 months after they laid off 6 in January to cut costs.

Man, I keep trying to get past the bitterness, but when I have friends who break down crying because of the stress caused by these assholes, I just want that fucking company to crash and burn.

tl;dr: Buy your books at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, or even better at any local stores that are left, just fucking stay away from Borders.

I hate it when people do this.  It's really creepy.  What happened to shopping being a cold and impersonal environment?

I am about half done building myself a room in my new apartment.  I'm pretty excited about it.  The new place is wonderful.  Beautiful location, and even with loud bands playing in the bar downstairs, it doesn't get too noisy.  Closer to school, closer to most of my favourite places to hang out (the record shop I like and the best bagel places are a bit further, but that's ok), and absolutely gigantic.

Unfortunately, one of my apartment mates couldn't clear his student status for this year, so he's going to Europe instead.  His younger brother will be living in the rather ramshackle room he left behind.  I'm a bit worried about this.  I don't know the brother well at all, and this will be his first year living away from home, going to university, etc.  Basically, a pretty transitional point in his life.  Hopefully it all works out well, I just expect he'll be in a fairly different headspace than most of the rest of us.
