I'm almost tempted to make that the new theme for the photothread

Right now I'm doing science and listening to the Mountain Goats. Not a bad way to spend a thursday morning. My advisor has informed me that I need to go out to a hardware store and jury-rig a lighting setup for our culture setups to get our new organisms to produce their photosynthetic pigments. Unfortunately, since he is gone for the summer, I'm out however much it costs (shouldn't be too much) until he gets back in late August.

Last night my city had it's annual premature 4th of July fireworks, which my roommate and I were able to watch from our porch.

Also: bought The Room for cheap and fully plan on getting trashed this weekend and watching it with friends.

Last night, I went down to the college campus in town - which is really quite gorgeous, by the by - to shoot some video footage with my friend Spencer of the poetry thing we'll be doing on our upcoming tour.

While we were there, we had a delightful run-in with a campus cop, who was showing off his impressive cop-stache as well as harassing* a few of our skater friends. In fairness to the guy, he was quite un-shitty about it, and didn't actually charge any of them with anything, but gave them a stern talking-to, which is better than many tales I have heard about campus security around here.

After that affair was over, we proceeded to shoot some more footage, including one awesome video of Spencer spitting one of his best poems while walking down Main Street. As soon as I can get the videos edited, I will post links here for the enjoyment of everyone.

Also, I had a wonderful dinner of teriyaki salmon, garden rice, and broccoli. It was healthy-ish food, and also tasty!

Hello internet!

My internet is back up! After many exasperating phone calls to the internet company I finally have "the web" in my shiny new apartment. Once I've cleaned up a bit tomorrow I will post a video (because static images are uncool) of my new digs. At any rate this is only half good because while the internet is working, it is only working if I plug my laptop directly into the router, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a wireless router but whatever, I'm working on it.

Feels good to be back. I don't think I've been without the internet for more than a few days at a time so not being able to check the forums or talk to my peeps on meebo for nearly three weeks was fucking terrible.

Guys the finalists from Akademi and I sang both the American and the Albanian national anthems. Holy shit what how did I learn that fuckin' song in two days

Oh and the Prime Minister and President of Albania both were like right in front, and the mayor of Tirana (who is running against the sitting PM for his position, votes ain't done being counted yet) was there too, and I was inches from being able to kick Mayor Edi Rama right in the spot he most needs it, and not having a mask and only wearing my Akademi uniform stopped me. I was within shoe-throwing distance of Pres. Topi and PM Berisha too and the same thing happened. What the fuck, man why my morals ain't no gotta get in the way of no justice

Oh and the chick with the ruuuudest titties on Akademi? Yeah I accidentally wound up feeling them up yeeeeeee that was awesome

Also a little high from my mini-afterparty and a little drunk still so yeah sorry about the shit post

Wasps' nests are a pain at any time, but for that extra little frisson, imagine a wasps' nest bursting through the plasterboard into the master bedroom a little before midnight.

You may have to imagine it, but I don't need to, because I have exactly that thing...

Linds you are very lucky.

Blog thread I am kind of lonely. I am constantly surrounded by people and right now my house is empty and quiet, except for me. I have to pack for a trip and clean up some things, but I feel really unmotivated.  I wish I had some company. A big empty house is creepy when it's dark.

Ok Best Buy. Just when I'm needing a job, you call me up for an interview to get me all in a tizzy. But apparently this interview is only to tell me that you are not hiring temporary positions, even though I wrote ON THE APPLICATION that I'm going back to school in September. Man I got all business-casualed up for that interview and everything.

Today was good! I finally started getting some stuff done that I want to do this summer. These are:

1. Practice my ass off at Spanish. (Does anyone here know Spanish?)

2. Learn to play guitar.

Yes, that's right, like 90% of all teenagers before me, I am trying to learn how to play the guitar. However I am lucky because I have a father who is a. really good at tocando la guitarra, b. is willing to teach me, c. knows a lot of cool stuff about classic rock that he's teaching me also, and d. has a sweet guitar.

I know enough Spanish to say, "What? I don't understand you. I'm sorry. My Spanish is very bad. Fuck your mother."

Also: Practice your ass off at Spanish guitar! :D

Blaggy,

I did things today but everything is so distant and hazy that it feels like a million years ago. My head hurts and I can't really think right now and I am making a lot of spelling errors. I'm not sure what is up.

I went to a fancy restaurant* and had a crazy expensive* dinner though. I remember that.

I feel like there is some really huge thing that I did today that I do not remember in the slightest.

A good week.

At the access station, they have a weekly live talk show that they use to promote community events, as well as train many of their volunteers. I've been working on it to learn the ropes, mostly either setting up lighting, or on one of the cameras. This past week, I got to play "technical director", which is the position in the control room that switches between cameras, or if there's extra material like stills or "b-roll" video, I transition it in as well. I listen for the director's cues, so when she says "take camera 3", I hit the camera 3 button and that is now what's on the air. Lots of fun, and I didn't mess up!

I'm also right in the middle of editing the 2nd episode of my own show. I have an hour of interview footage I have to cut down to 18 minutes to go along with the music shot in the studio. I think this is going to be a good one.  :-)

Friday night, I'm going to see a very pretty lady sing beautiful music, and Saturday, I'm getting together with a buddy from high school to go down to SF to see the Giants play.

It is a very, very good one, though.

Dear blag I wrote three songs in under 48 hours pretty recently! I am actually happy with two of them after two days of letting them sit, and one I might be okay with if I rewrite some parts! They're kinda dance pop-punk trash, but fuck it, I dig them, so whatever. I'll try to record them as soon as I'm in Alaska. Try to get a band together and all that. That'll be difficult though.

Love,
Me!

Today was a good day, Blog Thread!

Woke up at a reasonable time, went and had breakfast at my favourite café in town, called the New Norcia Bakery (I've raved about them on facebook/twitter before). Ate Breakfast trifle- sourdough fruit loaf, soaked in apple juice, yoghurt, muesli, sultanas and honey, drank the best coffee I've ever had. Came home to find my package of grooming stuff from MensBiz had just arrived.

Showered, used the new body wash stuff I got free with the shaving cream. Exfoliaty!

Shaved: Merkur 33C Razor loaded with a Merkur DE Blade, Vulfix #849 Pure badger brush, Taylor's of Old Bond Street Lavender Shaving cream. Glorious.

Did my hair with the Sharp's Guck-in-a-Puck. Never thought I'd be this excited about hair product. What am I becoming.

Got to work, the new student orientation was just finished. Loads of free Subway, potato chips and soft drinks. Pigged out.

Everybody else was worn out from the orientation, so no work got done and we just hung out and talked shit in the office all day.

Now: Listening to Rumours (hey, Rumours guys, holy crap). Gonna put on Shape of Punk to Come. Doing minimal work (mostly because there are mitigating factors that mean I can't do the stuff that I have to i.e; I have a good excuse for not doing anything) and posting this.

After work, gonna hang back and record my book-reading for you guys, then maybe go home and play some Guitar Hero, if no-one else is home.

Didn't even have to use my AK.

Hey blog thread

It's been crazy humid around here the past few days. Just walking about or playing mario kart was enough to make you sweat. Even sitting down intensely could do it. Now there is thunder and lightning which is pretty cool. It's still far away but I don't think I'll be going fishing today somehow.

I've now officially lived alone for a week and I'm still enjoying it. It's helped me to realise what my biggest requirements for a home are (when I get to buying/renting one of my own). I need to live near a town. The scenery up here in the rural hills is lovely and it's nice to have quiet and rolling fields and stuff, but it's too remote. I know that having a car would make a huge difference but I want to be able to walk for ten minutes and get to a supermarket and a row of shops and cafes, not walk for twenty minutes and get to a small post office which sells overpriced tinned peas and ice cream.

Today I haven't got work and no one is coming over, so I'm still in my pyjamas at quarter past three. I've stripped the bedding off two beds and I've another two to do, then I'm going to put some washing on and water the plants. It's odd how much more inclined I am to do housework when there is no one here demanding that it's done right now. I've known all along that I was right when I said that it wouldn't kill us to leave the washing up to do all in one go (rather than washing three plates, three times a day). The house probably does need hoovering more often than I would like to but nevertheless, the anarchistic chaos that my mum believes I will live in when I move out has not materialised yet.

Dear Hangover Thread,

Went to vegas wed/thurs night to spend time with flatmate's family he hasn't seen in forever.

Had fun time having breakfast.
bought shirt at banana republic for 16$.
Got phone charger.
Went to their hotel room and got pretty drunk off of Soju after having been awake 24 hours.
Helped flatmate (now very drunk, I was still a bit drunk) get back to hotel room.
Talk on yahoo messenger on phone to girl I am crushing on.
She says she likes me. I tell her things I don't remember (very well typed too).
Wake up at 7am, cannot fall asleep, only a bit of a headache.
Woo vegas woo.
Today we come home and I go to that crushes birthday party.

Blog thread, tonight I went to two these two bars/clubs I've never been to before. One was the Canton Lounge Bar which did great cocktails with great spirits and was laid back and not too strict on the dress code, which is neat because nothing I own screams 'lounge bar'. It was pretty empty but it was kinda cool and there was nothing below the middle shelf to be seen. After this we went to this club called Republic which is like a place for a hypothetical "too cool or too indie for Amplifier". The drinks were terrible, the staff seemed like they were working for free, they only had a bottom shelf and it had some seriously low points (Wipeout? Really?). They were ironically selling Emu Export and there were all these douchebags in flannel shirts and air force ones drinking it. The band was kinda cool, despite being three synths and a drum kit and one of their songs sounding like the theme to The IT Crowd. It's probably a pretty ok place to go when you're already fairly tanked and the line at Amps is too long and all you're looking to do is dance.

Bottom line is that Canton would be cool if they didn't let me in and Republic would be cool if I didn't have to drive home and there were more than three out of seven of us who wanted to dance.

Blog thread! I am in America, it is pretty tops. New York City is a fun place to be, although I am hungover as hell right now. Unfortunately on account of money and changing circumstances, I have been forced to move my return flight to just over a week earlier than planned, meaning I will not be able to attend ChicagoCon, much to my dismay. That said, if anyone is in NYC between now and July 8th (or on the 13th for that matter) or in Chicago between the 14th and 27th, then we should hang out or something! Maybe PM me about it or something so I will see it when I check my emails.

My dog is getting really old. I am afraid she might die or something bad soon. I hope not.

UNLOCKIN' ME SOME HERP, YEEEEEEEEEEE

Man my friend Arti is in town again and tonight's gonna be the last time I see him for a long, long time. I am really sad about this. He was gonna buy my old Les Paul clone, but he didn't have time to get the money, so I'm just like "Ehhhh fuck it here you go she is now yours" and he's all like "What are you doing man this is a nice guitar" and I'm like "Dude you have played the thing more in one single gig than I've played it over the last uh 4 years, and it is also not very reliable, so yeah, just fix her up and send me pictures from your gigs with her and we will call it even." I don't feel a single shred of remorse over it. He says he will buy me something to take care of the cost but I honestly don't care, guy deserves an axe that he loves, and he loves old Gertrude, so she is his now. Simple enough for me.

Blogy,

I've been to my grandparent's cabin, and done some fishing and some sunning and some chilling out. We fish like proper fishers, with nets and stuff, so thursday morning we woke up, and got out, and pulled up two buckets of fish. That was pretty neat. We also got some crabs, and some sick part of me enjoy cooking them alive. Because, if you didn't know, that's how you prepare crab. Get water a'boiling, and throw the crab in. They stop moving after two secs, so I'm guessing it's not that bad. Anyways, it was close to 30 Celsius (85ish fahrenheit START USING THE METRIC SYSTEM ALREADY) outside, I was hot, hot, hot. The best part was when I decided to take a run from our dock, through the forest and home, lost my way, and had to walk through the thickest forest in the direction I thought was home. I got through, but the forest had given me a mystery rash.

I also discovered that the books based on the Diablo universe is rather good. Surprising, but still.

Today my RPG group got together after a long break, and the GM had introduced new house rules! Instead of everyone drawing the same cards to see if the succeeded or failed, he started introducing new cards specially designed for each character. So the mage apprentice got cards saying "your spell said "poof", failed, and now there's spiders everywhere" or "instead of it's intended purpose, the spell undressed you completely". It added to the WTF element of the game. We also read through some of the old documents our GM had given us, and found a lot of hidden clues. He's really good at the GM game.

I am incredibly tired today, and my skin is in a bad way thanks to me not being brilliant at getting to bed on time or feeding myself the right foods (well, I eat the right foods, but then I eat crap as well). But instead of going to bed I have spent the last two hours playing around on Google maps in an entirely futile manner. I just went over to shut up the chickens and the greenhouse etc in my dressing gown, because I didn't get dressed today. I feel a bit sleazy and grubby, I'll be straight in the shower in the morning, but it was an interesting experiment. Everyone should have one pyjama day in their lifetime, I feel.

I'm not sure how to express how angry I am right now, my school blazer got knocked down and stepped on sometime between last night and this morning. Not a problem except for the fact that my glasses were in the breast pocket. So, now one of the lenses is broken.

Dear Blog:

I like The Jonas Brothers (but NOT their music) and I am spending my Friday night watching Kindergarden Cop with my be-moustached, Eastern Europeans father. NEW LOW.

Dear blog thread,

Lately I've been doing nothing but watching Torchwood and reading. Finally managed to make it out of the house and I picked up a bunch of books from the library, mostly Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett but there are some other great authors (Stephen Fry, Douglas Coupland, Iain M. Banks). Today I had a barbecue! We bought one a few weeks ago and have been eating nothing since.

Not much happening other than that. I did, however, find a sweet Astro Boy pencil in my basement unsharpened. Highlight of the week. Sad or sweet?

PS. I would also like to toss my hat into the "OH god why is it so hot out?" circle. It is so hot in Calgary, but it is also extremely windy. So that's cool....

This morning someone in the apartment block was doing some sort of construction, involving drilling, or some sort of grinding. It started at 7:30am and went for two and a half hours. On a saturday morning. I gave up and got up eventually.

I made cookies, though! About 30, from a recipe I posted on here ages ago and is super easy (it has a total of 5 ingredients). They are just choc chip ones, but there is so much chocolate in them, that it is hardly contained by the biscuitty outer. My Death By Chocolate cookies are once again a success. Now I just have to not eat them all by myself today.

Sounds like something T-Rex would do. Friggin' intense.

Blaggy, I partied at an art gallery with a bunch of old people.

It was awesome.
