Oh, exams. Today we looked at examples of previous exams, and among them were things like "interpret Silvia Plath's poem daddy."

This is possibly one of the worst poems I've ever read so I have nothing but sympathy for you here, Jens.

Like, that exam question was literally the first assignment in my Intro to Poetry course and as a result I dropped that course pronto.

My new math teacher is an absolute idiot. She enjoys telling us how she's met all of these famous people and how she's good friends with Billy Joe Armstrong and people of that nature. Her method of teaching is to give us a problem, not explain it and tell us to do it. Oh my god, she is so dumb.

On a happier note, we're doing Urinetown for our musical this year and I am so excited. I was going to tech stuff but then decided afterwards to do chorus and didn't even have to audition. Oh man, i cannot wait until the set is built, it is going to be so cool. I will give you all pictures of it.

We bought a basket of peppers from the market on Saturday, and today we were going through them to make omlettes and they are all covered in mold! Wtf. This is balls. But they were only a dollar so...not that big of a deal, i guess.

Also, I sent $161 on birthday presents last night! Woo being paid finally! $20 of that was shipping.

Holy crap!  Sports thread is getting an earful in a second.

Also, I think I am finally starting to recover from being the sick.  Last night was absolutely miserable, because it was far too hot to sleep (fever+60F outside+heat being on), but my fever is lower today than it was on Friday or yesterday.  I'm supposed to have graded homeworks by Tuesday, but that's not going to happen.  I will apologize profusely, and hopefully the professor will understand.  I hope to get solutions up by Tuesday (also haven't worked on those at all) and I'll definitely have the homework graded by Thursday.

Today's hockey practice shook me out of my funk but I fell pretty heavily on my coccyx and it's hurting some. For a moment when I landed I went all woozy but I think I'm fine, it was just shock and jarring on my spine.

I have to get some padding that fits! My right shin guard has no velcro so I have to hold it on with my socks, but I have no sock tape so my socks keep falling down. I have put in an order for some; today I had to use stick tape and it wasn't a great success. My padded shorts have a metal panel that is meant to absorb the shock from falls when you land like I did, but the shorts are much too big so the little plate was about three inches too low to be any use.

On the plus side I no longer have to feel awkward and worry about whether or not to come out as gay to the team, because I think basically everyone knows now and it is Not A Big Thing. I'm always super concerned that people will be freaked out and it hasn't ever happened that way; I might stop worrying about it now.

So,

The good:
I finally got fully moved in to my apartment. I have all of my stuff again! Hooray! No more squatting at the girlfriend's house! I got cable and internet and food and everything is fun times. I also may be starting up my band again. Plus, I joined another band as bassist.

The medium:

My best friend since I was in grade school just got a job in California. He is moving away this week and there is a distinct possibility that we will totally drift apart. This possibility is made more likely by the fact that we hardly spoke during college.

The bad:

My grandmother was admitted to the hospital because she was vomiting blood. Over the course of a week they discovered that she had a bleeding ulcer, a blood infection, her bladder wasn't functioning, she had fluid in her lungs, cancer in her liver, and she may have suffered a stroke. She has since been transferred into hospice care. The doctors say she will probably not make it to Thanksgiving.

Four months ago my grandmother was living on her own in a house. No one worried about her because she got around fine and never complained of anything. She tripped one day and fractured her leg and had to be put in a rehab center for a while. I can't believe how quickly she has deteriorated. She barely remembers who I am anymore. Sigh.

I don't know how to feel about the whole mess.

Haha, I've been thinking about buying/downloading some Spanish audio courses just because I want to brush up on it and get to the point where I could have a conversation again.

I had a blissfully boring day! Meaning nobody came in and bothered me, so I organized things and was all zen and whatnot. Also, we got free chocolate truffles (goooood ones) today from one of our account customers and also my manager cracked open one of our watercolor kits and we played with that. (It's ok to do that, because we can use them as samples to make people buy them.) Nothing happened and by god it was great. (Still looking for jobs though. I'll be sending my resume to a few places I found on craigslist later.)

Also also, I am rocking a buzz and am in my happy place, which is always a good way to end a day.

From constant listening I have developed unusual and frankly useless traits. For example, I can recite practically all of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy radio plays because I listened to them so much as a child. Likewise, from current listening habits I can also recite near enough every recorded Lenny Bruce skit or joke. There's also an album of ambient music by my friend Chris Herbert called Mezzotint which I can now imitate despite the fact that it has no standard notation, chords or lyrics.

similarly, i know every word to "party in the u.s.a."

This morning I learnt that text is possibly the worst medium to use for Serious Relationship Conversations. I knew that it probably would be, but when it's the only reliable means of contact, there isn't much choice in the matter. Typically enough, my poor choice of words and the lack of general feeling inherent in text messages means I have probably Fucked Up Big Time. Again.  :-(

On the bright side I have made super nerdy friends. One of them recites the textbook from memory. He told me he solved all the questions to every chapter within the first month at uni, so now he just shows up to verify his memory. Madness! But he's really smart and nice and everything, and he asked me to join a colloquial group, so now I will be super smart as well I guess

This kind of intelligence invariably makes me jealous.  Wow.

I know someone that when we're quizzing each other before exams you can see his eyes move as he reads the lecture slides from memory.

There was a guy in my ear training class that would say the names of the notes as the professor was playing them (he couldn't see the piano), and then it would take him 20-30 seconds to figure out the interval, though he already knew the notes.

haha, probably not going to book them. just made me feel popular.

okay, sorry, here is a huge rant.

I interviewed with a portfolio today with the painting I professor, since I'll be done with the prereq, drawing I, next semester and I want to take another art class for my major. the professor crushed me. she insulted me so many times in those 15 minutes - all of my drawings were from my drawing I class. she called my pieces boring (most of them were figure drawing from class) and told me her class would never do anything like that. she asked me why I hadn't drawn a seat into an unfinished figure drawing and I had no answer. she also made me pick out problems with that figure drawing (and then told me what the problems were anyways). she dismissed an enormous landscape over the course of many hours by saying "there's no light source." she looked at my gesture drawings and said "those aren't gestures, they're outlines, do you have any gesture drawings with tone?" she spent the last 5 minutes telling me about alternatives to the class which she said I hadn't properly thought about and told me to take architecture or sculpture. when I told her architecture isn't open to first years she just said "oh."

that woman had no right to stand there and critique my artwork. it was not appropriate to point out the flaws in finished pieces, nor was it okay to criticize subject matter in pieces drawn during classtime. she just had to assert her artistic superiority over me which is, quite frankly, retarded. I'm fucking pissed. good thing I won't get into the course. she actually just humiliated me. biiiitch.

ps: this post will probably disappear soon.

Ummm, didn't she kind of have every right to critique your artwork? I mean she was a bitch yeah and she shouldn't have acted in the way she did but you went to the interview expecting that she would look at your work and just either say "yes" or "no"? It always sucks when people like that are fuckwits for no reason and I get that you're angry about it but saying she had no right to critique your artwork is a little silly.

my problem is that she didn't give me a critique, she told me that everything I had done was wrong, including instances where I had been following an assignment for a different professor. it's an intro painting class! if I already knew everything about art I wouldn't be taking art class! clearly I needed my ego knocked down a bit anyways because uh, I did cry, but I am immensely frustrated. it would've been one thing if I'd been applying for a job. it's another thing to be interviewing to take a class. it was not her job to tell me that I'm a bad artist.

That sounds like most weeks in lessons as a music major.  The difference is that I was getting a degree in the subject, and I also respond a lot better to that sort of thing (I basically would go into the practice rooms every week saying "Fuck you, Frank" and worked my ass off, which was probably his goal...the bastard).

She was definitely over the top.  I would expect that sort of thing from an end-of-semester panel for an art major (do they have those sorts of things like music juries?), but not for someone who has only taken one art class interviewing to take another.  Especially since she clearly doesn't know how classes work.

Ally, I agree, that's a really shitty thing for her to do. I just really don't get teachers in any kind of creative art who practice that kind of soul-crushing behavior. You're taking these classes to LEARN this stuff, not to prove that you can already do it.
