Gemmwah:
I am so happy I don't have to go to work until Sunday yes yes yes yes! Hell yes. I will not be taken advantage of by a supermarket.

tania:
i constantly get roped into doing tech support for my family too. i've installed about five different anti-virus and/or anti-spyware programs on their home computer and explained very slowly and carefully how to use them as well as how to do a disk cleanup and how to defragment, but every time i visit it's still "oh, we just couldn't figure it out, and the computer is so slow, can you get it working again?" what do you mean you couldn't figure it out? you click the button that says "scan".

i want to say this is a generational thing but there are lots of older people on this forum that are thousands of times better with computers than i am so i really don't know what it is. i guess it's a thing of some kind, but what i'll never know.

KvP:
I'm doin that right now for my grandparents and do it several times a year with my dad. I guess I take having grown up with computers for granted.

Alex C:
To be honest, I think many people simply dismiss the idea that they can learn how to use computers out of hand and envision worst case scenarios every time they have to improvise or work via context a bit. I've met many people who become suddenly overcautious when operating a pc, not just senior citizens, and I think it's worth mentioning that one of the things that makes young kids so good at learning is the simple fact that they tend to be more curious than cautious. I mean, yeah, kids do generally learn more quickly than older people for various developmental reasons, but on the other hand, a friend of mine has a grandmother who apparently learned how to use C++, so it's not like an old dog can't learn new tricks.

After all, I'm sure there's more than a few of us on the forums who don't really have all that much real theoretical knowledge of how exactly pcs work or have ever slapped together their own rig out of OEM components. But I'm also certain that many of these same people do just fine largely because they've never really questioned their ability to make a simple installation wizard work after a few tries. Hell, looking at my own skill set, I must admit that a lot of what I do when troubleshooting has more in common with voodoo than computer science, and my successes owe more to trial and error than anything else. I'm a lot more computer savvy than my younger sister is, but really the only thing that seperates us is the simple fact that I think I can make it work while she's always afraid of making it worse.

RedLion:
Well.

I went to the doctors today and, to cut a long story short, I may need sinus surgery.Based on Tommy's experience though, I'm extremely, extremely hesitant. I'm not sure it would even be worth it.
