About dates, BTW: I really like the taste of dates, but it's practically impossible to find fresh ones up here in the frozen north. All we have is the dried ones. I've always wanted to taste fresh dates. But as a married man, I guess I'm stuck with dried ones...

Seems like Marten is getting desperate. And pathetic. Unless this is part of a grand master plan, I would like to forget the whole party and all the participants (except Tai, but including Marten).

I interpreted it as him joking while also hoping she'd agree. Joke flirting is relatively safe. You toss it out there and if she flirts back, great; ifshe doesn't, you get to save face since it was not a serious attempt. Judging by his face in the last panel, I am guessing he expected more of a light chuckle. No one wants the idea of making out with them to be gut-busting hilarious.
