I took it as reed-like, as in bending with the wind. Among the forumoids who thought the same, he was/is seen as either resilient or spineless, depending on the forumoid.

"Slender reed" implies weakness.

The Boss has said that he had regretted naming the webcomic as such years ago. I bet if he could go back to 2003, he'd tell his past self to call it something different.
Of course, somethingdifferent.com might have been taken as domain name already back then...
