The only time I hear 'wicked' used as an intensifier, it's as a joke by people trying to sound as uncool as possible.

Nope. Unless you were born in the South, you'll always be a Damn Yankee, no matter how long you live down there. The same as me. :)

I thought it was "hella," or am I just confusing that with the crappy car modification with the same word in it?

No, "hella" is used like "wicked" in New England. As an adverb, meaning "very". Jeph's used "hell of" which is just weird.
