Schmorgluck:

--- Quote from: NilsO on 20 Mar 2014, 04:14 ---So what would turn (or not turn) Hannelore on? Based on earlier hints in the series, I would guess:

* Sexy firemen (as a concept, not in real life).
* Hannelore has purchased sexy pictures of firemen before. Winslow is a prude, by the way.
* No beards, please!
* No oral sex, either!
* In fact, no sexual acts at all !
* But Hannelore is definitely interested in the concept of sex, just not the messy details.
* Hannelore is also into grabbing butts (who isn't?)
* Hannelore's ideal husband would have to be gay.
* My guess is Hannelore would be really turned on by a Chippendales performance.But Hannelore has a desire to be normal, and has on several occasions challenged her own phobias. Maybe we shall see further character development after she has finished studying the USB stick?

--- End quote ---
And let's not forget that Hannelore has at least manifested curiosity about sex-toys. And she's good at keeping things clean so... But things could still get messy and...

I'm super-uncomfortable with this line of thought reguarding Hanners, but the deductive parts of my mind wouldn't shut up about it... I see logical arguments either way, but I feel too squicked out to express them fully.

NilsO:
Jeph has stated that Hannelore is not asexual, she just has serious phobias and OCD. She is theoretically heterosexual, but obviously unable to have a physical relationship. She is interested in sex as a concept, but is unable to handle the messy details. But she is slowly changing, thanks to her friends. She even enjoys small physical intimacies occasionally.

Case:

--- Quote from: Method of Madness on 20 Mar 2014, 10:00 ---You mean the big groan theory!

Yup, minus half an ethernet in the cosmology pun-jar, I guess ...  :oops:

--- Quote from: Zwammy on 19 Mar 2014, 17:59 ---
--- Quote from: Jazzmaster on 18 Mar 2014, 20:29 ---Marten finally comes out and says it.  I wasn't sure if he was happy with his current lot in life or not, but I guess he really isn't.

--- End quote ---

Well, we always known he was a bit depressed about things, even if he jokes about it. He's been bitching about life in bars from the very start of the comic, and the first apartment we saw him in was painted "the favorite color of depressed people."

--- End quote ---

All true, but there was a Q&A where Jeph said Marten is not suffering from depression.
...

--- End quote ---
I was wondering about that - Marten's inability to hold on to good feelings has been the topic of many comics & as someone who's done his share of wrestling with anxieties/OCD, I thought there might have been a specific medical background Jeph had in mind (Like with Faye (Trauma), Dora (control/sibling/something issues) or Hanners (OCD))
Do you recall which Q&A dump that was? (Or just wether it was the tumblr ones, or in his 'soup'?)

This one seems to support the "Nope, not depressive, just a liberal arts graduate"-theory (*)
--- Quote ---With the exception of Dora, who is a small business owner, and Raven, who’s back to school, finding career paths seem like fairly low priorities for your characters. Is that an intentional decision to leave a clear path to focus on their emotional lives? A function of time moving more slowly in the strip than it is in the real world? Is it a function of living in a college town without a lot of non-academic industries or a terrible economy? And whatever happened to Hannelore’s counting business?

A lot of it is based on who I was in my twenties, and the Northampton folks I know who are that age now. When you’re living in a college town and all you’ve got is a liberal arts degree, you’re pretty much gonna take whatever job you can get that pays the bills and isn’t too demanding. I think the philosophy is that working a job that is relatively low-responsibility and low-committment gives you more time and energy to focus on the stuff you REALLY care about. That’s certainly how I felt about it when I was 23!
--- End quote ---
So maybe Marten is 'just' disoriented & discouraged, rather than wrestling with some specific medical issue?

(*) I should maybe make a point of making it known that I was referring to the "clichee" of the employment perspectives of many good & highly educated people who done nothing worse than choosing to follow their hearts desire, and not thumbing my nose at the humanities & their graduates.
