I think it's the former. As the Arc That Shall Not Be Linked clearly demonstrated, he can be very determined in "self-medicating with alcohol".

I have no doubts that Marten's going to do something he'll regret. What that is, I have no clue whatsoever, but nothing good comes of having to be dragged back home.
