It's "style" or just "rules", as in The Oxford Guide to Style (formerly called Hart's Rules for Compositors).  It doesn't affect sentence formation or the relationship of words, so it's not grammar - it's a typographical issue.

Oh my god. I just told my wife, a die-hard Michigan fan, about this concept of referring to OSU as "An Ohio State University" for trash-talking purposes, and her reaction was roughly akin to Faye's upon hearing Angus cried watching Yaoi cartoons.

And yes, it should definitely be The Promise Ring. No question about it. Wouldn't have pegged Marten (or Jeph) as a fan of such a quintessentially emo band.

That's what some of us graduates of the Buckeye State's less-exalted alma maters use to refer to our schools. Although the newspaper in Dayton got off a nice shot when U of Dayton kicked the Buckeyes out of the NCAA basketball championship play. The headline was "THE University of Dayton." It almost made me wish I gave a damn about basketball.

Back in the 1980s Duke students used to trash-talk UNC by calling Duke "THE University of North Carolina". As an NC State student, I appreciated the dig while calling BS on the implication.  :-D
