I always thought that 'kitty' could refer to any cat. It's certainly how I use it.

I mean, I use "puppy" to refer to any playful dog, regardless of age, I figured "kitty" was the catquivalent (yes, I did) of "puppy". Where it technically meant "baby cat" but was used when talking to any cat.
