miscellaneous musings
Pilchard123:
I have a few of the Jennings books in French. They're not as good as the English versions (which I highly recommend).
ev4n:
I did a full course and a half course in uni in French lit. It was cool, except when it was terrible (Proust, /shudder), but I can't really imagine wanting to read the same book in multiple languages. Heck, if I wanted to read Les Mis, I'd probably search out the French version, because wondering how good the translation was would probably drive me nuts.
GarandMarine:
The difference between politeness and tact. “Imagine you inadvertently enter a bathroom where a woman is standing naked under the shower, Politeness requires that you quickly close the door and say, ‘Pardon, Madame!’, whereas tact would be to quickly close the door and say: ‘Pardon, Monsieur!’"
-Delphine Seyrig, Baisers volés, 1968
Loki:
I don't get it
You are supposed to pretend you didn't recognise her as a woman in hopes of making it less awkward?
BeoPuppy:
Thereby indicating to the lady that you haven't even seen their gender so you haven't seen any of the give away bits.
