(I ended up not getting the bus and walking home at 1. It was okay, though, since a few other people had to walk into the same direction).

pwhodges:
"Half <hour>" is short for "half past <hour>" in English usage.  Knowing that it's the other way around for you is something I was taught in German lessons at school.

But then by that logic "half twelve" would be six, right?  It's idiom; IOW it is what it is.
