Technically, Becky was introduced much earlier. As in the first panel of the first strip, to the left of Joyce, with the first speaking line in the comic: http://www.dumbingofage.com/2010/comic/book-1/01-move-in-day/home/

So, Becky was the first character to be introduced.

Essentially. Assuming Becky finds other accommodations. Mary is going to find herself in a very bad position soon. This delights me thoroughly.

I am looking forward to Mary getting what's coming to her, and I say that as someone who typically dislikes the idea of vengeance. Maybe it's the many uber-religious hypocrites I know IRL that never get their comeuppance in this life, but I definitely am looking forward to that being different in my entertainment.

I have a feeling Marys downfall will be abrupt, sudden and will contain a large audience of her fellow College alumni and conclude with her being run out of town on a rail.

Ideally, Ruth will make a big production right at the start of the meeting that Mary told her there is a non-student living in the dorms against the rules, and  that she (Ruth) will find out who it is. Ruth gets to maintain her 'Ruthless' reputation by making it sound like horrible things will happen to Becky, and the blame for her finding out about it will fall straight on top of Mary's head. Becky is apparently well liked by the other girls in the hall, and they've been watching out for her, those that know she's living there. So I'd be willing to bet there would be more than a few angry people looking to get some payback, or at least treat Mary with a fair bit of hostility. More than she already gets, at any rate.

This would also pull the teeth on half the threat she's holding over Ruth, that Becky was living there and Ruth isn't doing anything about it... But publicly stating now that Ruth does know about it, she'll deal with it in some non-specified by likely unpleasant way. Billie is clearing out of Ruth's room, and the booze has been removed, so even if Mary goes to the faculty about the two of them, it will pretty much come down to her word vs Ruth's. And Ruth has said that staff loves her because she runs a tight ship. She can also point out that Mary is a trouble maker, and suggest she's just trying to get back at Ruth after being caught using transphobic slurs to another student... Basically, unless Mary can provide evidence that Ruth was doing wrong, going to the staff is going to go bad for her, not for Ruth.

What I found funny about 2/18's strip is the way no-one seems slightly ruffled by Ruth's total failure to deliver the safety lecture and they're all gone literally as fast as it takes you to read Mary's lines in panels 6-8. Either not many others at IU were particularly traumatised or even bothered by Ross's rampage... including those who were directly targeted (Dina was at the meeting) or they all have better things to do on a Friday night.

Overall, I can't blame Ruth for not wanting to bother under those circumstances.

The problem of having any kind of relationship with an extreme depressive like Ruth who, arguably, is a suicidal depressive, is that they are always trying to hurt you to get your out of their lives. This isn't out of malice but in order to enable their own suicidal ideation. They literally have a part of them that's continually badgering them to kill themselves and they need to get anyone they care about alienated so they aren't hurt when they do it.

In a very real sense, Ruth thinks she deserves to die and is trying to prevent there from being anything to stop her from doing so.

I remain quite sure that, in the future of DoA, we might have a few strips where Billie goes to visit Ruth at the secure centre where she's being treated. It would be sad but all-too realistic.

Basically. I was the same way with my wife. Hell, with all my relationships. Depression is a crippling thing to live with. It's constantly gnawing on the back of your mind telling you you are worthless and don't deserve having anyone care about you. And then there are the times you resent anyone who cares about you for being an impediment to your self destruction. It's really hard to convey to neurotypical people just how much depression fucks with your thinking.

I'm holding on for more information. Lord knows, I'm aware Sitnspin isn't talking out of her ass, but at the same time, my personal experience with depression, so far linking up weirdly closely to Ruth and Billie's, hasn't gone so far, and I doubt it has in most examples. DoA is pretty good at playing the averages, so I doubt I'm abnormal in that my personal depression/bipolar experiences won't go too incredibly far from what Billie/Ruth survive. Lord knows, I've never been to a secure center.

But... Who the hell knows aside from Willis. I'm not going to think it too deeply, because I know from experience, I'll be wrong. This is his rollercoaster. Imma ride it.

As I understand it, the dude draws/plans months ahead. He absolutely knows the physical events. He doesn't know the dialogue just yet, or the exact punchlines.

No worries, no offense taken, just clarifying.

Is hate-missing still missing? Also I think I just invented the term "hate-missing".

Is hate-missing still missing?

Yes it is and I also think that it means two things for Sarah:
  • She is getting used to Joyce and her ways;
  • Maybe she doesn't hate her ways as much as she thought!

You can hate something and still feel it's absence when it's gone. The two are in fact, not related. More accurately though, Sarah doesn't hate Joyce. Her life would actually be a lot easier if she did. She may be annoyed by some of her ways... But she totally has a big sister vibe going with Joyce.

The title of this storyline is extremely ominous

I seriously doubt a weekend with her mother with Becky there is going to be good for Joyce's faith. I mean mums didn't even make it TO dinner without starting in on the Becky jabs...

My prediction is that Becky is going to go to her dad's house to get her Social Security card, finds the doors locked, and gets in through the window.
