She actually has a premonition about this conversation in panel 3 of 2838, and the timing of it along with Marten's open invitation just makes things worse. It all makes sense now!

With Tai, it always boils down to sex in strange places or ways, doesn't it? Sometimes, I think that she lets her inner erotica writer have too much influence over her everyday life. Frankly, I think that Jeph is setting up a scenario where Claire (who we know has been thinking about it a lot) jumps Marten. I've got the feeling that sex in the stacks is her personal kink, you see!
I also think that the Easter Egg Contraceptive hunt is setting up a crude comedy of errors. Claire will come on strong (because Tai said that Marten needs 'a little push' every now and then). Then she finds that he has a pocket full of recovered condoms and mistakes that for an indication that he was planning this anyway. This will either surprise her, make her nervous and make her decide to wait for when there is less pressure or it will mean that they don't get any work done that day!
P.S.: Dang! Panel 4 reminds me just how tall Emily is!

You know how everyone romanticizes sex on the beach, but the reality is sand in places you don't want sad, and salt rubbing in thereafter?
Yeah.
This would lead to papercuts in places you really don't want to get papercuts. And some moist books. Heresy.

Agreed; as a rule of thumb, the character's expression relates to what they are saying in that panel if they are talking. Only if they're not talking does their expression relate to either what is being said by others in that panel or what was said in the last.

Actually, if there was a panel 5, I think both Claire and Tai would be staring at Emily, either in stunned silence or shouting: "You did WHAT?!?"
