Yup. Faye is a known problem drinker. She has been from her first appearance. How much of that was intended from the beginning, I would not try to guess. But it is there.

She has used alcohol as a crutch. The unknowns, at this point are: "can she 'walk' without it?" One of the things common to early stage addiction is the ability to get hammered without appearing drunk. "Is she, instead, hiding from her feelings behind the bottle?" Her previous behavior is consistent with that too.

I think the Angus situation has hit her harder than she's willing to admit..

At least she has a decent support network.  I wonder what Doctor Corrine's gonna say about this.

I was just thinking how Claire is better for Marten than Dora, because I can see Marten calming Faye down, and Claire walking in on them, but instead of suspecting anything, her reaction would probably be "oh no, is Faye alright?" In fact, I can see that exact scenario playing out just to show how solid their relationship is.

Unless Claire were in one of her "moods" to begin with. If she feels thwarted, she can be...self-centered.

OTOH, I just don't see that lasting, and Claire would be mortified, later. It's very difficult to project what kind of relationship insecurities Claire may have, as she's never had a relationship before. But based on her previous actions, she just doesn't run hot for long. Jumping to negative conclusions doesn't seem her style, though I may misremember.

That said, Dora had reason--good or not--to view Faye as a rival. (Comics 4 thought 564, to be exact.) I just don't see Claire having the same issues.

Claire's clearly very against the idea of cheating, but I'm still hoping she'll recognize there's nothing there because Faye's the one who gave them a nudge and helped get their relationship started in the first place.

Not a real comic (judging by hitting Previous and Next and not getting back to it).  Save it while you can...

Newcomers who truly appreciate Yelling Bird may not realize that he once had his very own strip.

Kind of weird that Jeph would do that (along with the adorable Christmas illustration) since Holiday and New Year's comics in previous years are still up, but maybe he's trying to get the weekly strip numbers to sync back up again.

Also kind of weird to give Faye a cry-for-help moment, only to interrupt with Yelling Bird, but it'll appear seamless to archive-bingers.

January: at least it isn't Ebola.
February:jokes on you, Y.B., I'm single
March: AGAIN?! I really need to stop messing with that Necro-om-nicon (or however it's pronounced) book.
April: at least he told somebody to do that...
May: as usual.
June: but I don't owe him any money, I bought a BRZ from the Subaru dealership!
July: I'll take "What is making Yelling Bird so angry" for $500, Alex.
August: should've bought an anteater after the first time.
September: it's for a good cause, lots of frustrated housewives need them!
October: I should've just given them the treats!
November: first step is admitting that I have a problem...
December: didn't that happen last year?

The president will tell me to fuck off? Well, maybe he's just mad at all the people who tell him the same. Would it be a nationally televised fuck off? I feel like he'd be better off telling Un or Putin to fuck off before he tells me. I mean I'm just... ambivalent towards him...

Glorious leader Kim isn't really worth the effort. I'm not sure POTUS hasn't told Putin to fuck off. They really don't like each other. Considering the way Putin treats his friends We could see YB posted as US Ambassador to Russia any day now.

I am beginning to worry about Faye's future employment status.

Okay, I was also worried that Dora would fire Faye after the sword incident with SKULLMASTER, MASTER OF SKULLS, so I sometimes worry too much, but this time alcohol is involved and Dora clearly isn't going to put up with that shit.

Dora knows Faye and is aware of what's driving this.  She will, no doubt, see it as a Fayesque 'Cry for Help' and, as she did before, give the necessary 'Smackdown' Faye needs to get this sorted.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the next Comic being Dora dragging Faye by her earlobe to Doctor Corrine.

Ouch. Faye is trying to be cute and to make a joke of it. That is generally a sign that things are getting very bad. I just hope that she doesn't try to fight Dora for control of the bottle or some other addict behaviour.

Faye's friends may have no choice but to put her through turkey, which won't be pleasant!

I agree, going cold turkey is never pheasant, but sometimes necessary. Faye seems to know she needs help, but is to chicken to ask for it directly. Still, it's better to eat a little crow and accept some help from friends before you wind up doing something you're going to egret.

Technically, alcohol is a solution.

Techically, alcohol by itself is not a solution. Liquor is a solution of alcohol (and usually other things) in water. Or vice versa.

Going cold turkey with booze is possibly deadly, though.

IMO, Faye is keeping herself just slightly inebriated so she doesn't have to feel the pain she feels at the failure of her relationship with Angus and think about whose fault it may or may not have been. If her friends force her to do without that crutch, I strongly suspect that it will be one of the darkest and hardest journeys she's had to go on for a while.

Yes, I thought that statement was a bit precipitate.

Now onto Faye - time to gather the clan. She's hurtin' bad. In need of help. A therapist visit certainly, but also supportive environment. Dora's efforts are a very, very good start, but she needs backup, stat.

Yep, that statement only applies to hard-core alcoholics who've been pounding down bottles of cheap hard liquor daily for years (this poster recalls Faye's hard-drinking history throughout the comic....). Uh oh. Maybe cold turkey won't be so good for Faye after all.

You're right, of course. Perhaps I should have been more precise, as I did use the word 'technically'. I was just going with alcohol ~ alcoholic beverages since Dora used it in that sense when she used the "Alcohol is not a solution" cliche.

Also, (I swear I knew this before I checked Wikipedia to be sure) ethanol produced along with water (such as in fermentation) can only be purified to around 95% by distillation. Other techniques need to be used to remove more of the water than that.

By the way, never try to drink 'denatured alcohol'. That is ethanol, but with extra stuff added to make it taste awful and be acutely toxic, so that it isn't subject to alcoholic beverage taxes.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

And the fact that though she can't directly admit it, Faye is seeking help. She knows she's in a bad way. Otherwise she would be sneaking the drinks at work.. Or just openly drinking without asking.

I agree, going cold turkey is never pheasant, but sometimes necessary. Faye seems to know she needs help, but is to chicken to ask for it directly. Still, it's better to eat a little crow and accept some help from friends before you wind up doing something you're going to egret.

Going cold turkey with booze is possibly deadly, though.
OH MY GOD! Neko is advising Faye to do something that could KILL her? :psyduck: Are you stork raven mad? I won't tern a blind eye to this! I can't let Faye get so thoughtlessly murder... of crows I can't!
(OK, maybe that last one was a little strained. The fault is mynah...)

The poll option has been bothering me all week, so I'd like to take this last opportunity to point out that the song you sing on New Year's Eve is spelled "Auld Lang Syne"...

Disagree: it was very strained, a major fowl.

How about Auld Lang Sine Wave?

A "buttload" is an actual measurement, next time someone tells you that they need a buttload of something, tell them 126 gallons might be a bit too much.

My impression is that for several months, Faye has not been constantly drinking. She has drunk more than the others, and maybe more than is healthy, but most days she has not been drunk. That means that she will not get delirium tremens when if she stops her current binge now.
