There was this Tom Hanks movie that they really should have found a way to show, as well.  'Big' came out in 1988, though, so it was 11 years old at the time.  Sometimes drive-ins and little theaters here and there can make a living showing movies more than 5 years old, but it's not very mainstream.

Still, it looks like they had a running gag going, right?

That said, those marquee signs with the movable letters are literally the easiest thing in the world to photoshop.  You can make a sign like that say anything in a picture and it's mostly impossible to tell it got futzed with.  So, these days, I can never quite believe a photo of one of them showing anything funny or risque is as real as it appears to be.

Which is a shame, because doubting such things tends to make the world a little less magical and cool.

Weeellll.... the *joke* was that the one cinema was doing it... gave a a BIT of artistic licence! :)
