I agree with the comic. Start with The Hobbit. Its far more enjoyable than LotR. Its also an easy read.

The Hobbit reads like a book for children. Because that's what it is.

I started reading at The Two Towers - it was a gift. So, my first reading order was The Two Towers, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Return of the King, Farmer Giles of Ham, Silmarillion, and only then The Hobbit.

Looking at how light-hearted LotR was until Bree, or maybe even up to rivendell, you can see it was initially set to be more of a child friendly adventure...
