To me, all dark roasts taste burnt.  Light or medium, please.  If you want a touch of the burnt flavour, mix in some dark beans with light or medium to have at least a balanced profile.  The best espresso I have had in the US was in a place that I used to work, where instead of the burnt stuff, they used a light-medium roast on the beans (closer to the medium end, but quite smooth, and could comfortably be sipped straight).
